HSC alum among UW senators

University of Wyoming students have elected Ben Wetzel, a current sophomore in molecular biology, from Powell, as the president of the Associated Students of UW (ASUW).

Jaynie Welsh, also a current sophomore in molecular biology, from Rock Springs, was elected vice president.

Wetzel will preside over the student government that oversees a budget of more than $1 million, including funding for a variety of student programs. He also will serve as an ex-officio member of the UW Board of Trustees.

UW students also elected ASUW senators, who serve on various committees and represent their colleges in budgetary and policy matters affecting all UW students.

Eric Herold, a 2016 Thermopolis graduate, was elected for the College of Arts and Sciences. Herold is the son of Greg and Lisa, both graduates of UW as well as his brother Colin. His sister, Annelisa, attends at the university as well. Herold is also a freshman senator at the university, and third baseman for the club baseball team.

During his high school career, he was in Spanish Club and Band all four years. In sports, he lettered in football and golf all four years, and in basketball his sophomore, junior and senior years; he participated in basketball his freshman year.

Also during his freshman year, he was treasurer for Student Council and a member of Key Club. His junior year, he became a National Honor Society member and participated in the Close Up program — both of which continued into his senior year — and he was named student athlete of the month. He also student taught the fourth grade class in Community Resource Training his senior year.

Herold stated, “I believe that that the biggest influence for me to join the ASUW was my older brother. While in school, Colin was an Executive for the ASUW Full Senate. He was the first person in my life to really grab my attention for student government.”
