The Thermopolis Middle School track team will see their first competition this season at Powell, with a meet scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Coach Stephanie Czarobski recently commented on students at each grade level. Regarding the eighth grade, she stated, “They are a very promising group . . . I think their grade as a whole will do great. They come to practice asking for more work and stay late to run extra sprints. They’ve been a great example for our younger team and I really look forward to watching them lead our team this year.”
As for specific students and where she expects to see their standout performances, Czarobski noted Logan Cole in the throwing events and long jump, Jaxson Jensen in high jump and hurdle events, Dayna Sandberg in sprinting, Jasmine Collins in distance running — both Sandberg and Collins ran cross country — Maggie Cable in the 400 meters and distance running, and Bri DeVries in sprinting and horizontal jumps.
As for seventh grade, Czarobski stated, “Hallie Maritinez had a fantastic cross country season so we are expecting great things in the 1600 meters and 800 meters. Caydence Becher and Mariah Brooks were great jumpers last year. Their coaches are expecting great things this season from both girls.”
Julie Johnson did great in the 400 meters last year, Czarobski stated, and “Wyatt McDermott will be fun to watch on pole vault; he keeps getting better every practice.” Austin Barral, she further noted, will be one to watch in the throwing events.
“We have a large group of sixth graders that are eager to give the sport a try and they are all very talented,” Czarobski stated. “Brooklynn Cooley and Skarlett Hultman both push themselves to keep up with the older kids. We’re not sure where these two ladies will end up in specific events, but their coaches are very pleased with their work so far.”
Czarobski further noted Lexi Overfield and Spencer Calhoun both competed in cross country this year, and the coaches are thrilled to have them on the team as they’ll be great in distance events. Also, Gavin Shumway and Tanner Jensen have showed a lot of talent in the high jump.
In addition to this Saturday’s event, middle school students will compete April 20 at Worland, April 22 at Cody and April 29 at Lander. Thermopolis will host the middle school track conference on May 6, and the Best of the Best event, May 9 at Lander, will close out the season.
