Firestorm of 'what-ifs'

Everyone has their favorite memories from school, whether it was Friday night football games or the halftime show, wrestling trips, wood shop or finally figuring out Algebra, we all have something that sticks out in our minds.

With the budget cuts facing our school district, many are afraid their students will not only miss out on an educational opportunity, but perhaps the chance to make the memories we did with extra-curricular activities.

There is no skirting the issue of deep cuts coming to a lot of programs in the coming weeks. We can’t ignore the financial straits the Wyoming State Legislature has put all Wyoming schools in for at least the next two years.

Unfortunately, social media takes the upcoming cuts and turns them into a firestorm of ‘what-ifs.’

“What if they cut the football program?” “What if they do away with band?” “What if __insert your favorite program here__ goes away?”

Truthfully, we don’t know what these cuts will mean for any particular program or activity, but we can rest assured that the core subjects, reading, math, science and English are not going away.

Our children are still going to get a quality education. Our children will leave our town ready to face the world, whether it’s off to college, a trade school or straight into the workforce.

The only way to truly know what’s going on is to participate in the educational system. Attend the school board meetings. Voice your concerns to the superintendent.

One thing we can be sure of, people behind the scenes have been working hard to ensure our children have the opportunity to create memories of school just like we did.
