Veterans to receive welcome home

The public is invited to attend the Wyoming Veterans “Welcome Home” Day, Monday, April 3, beginning at 11 a.m. at VFE Post No. 2281, 302 Broadway.

In attendance will be Governor Matt Mead, Major General Luke Reiner and Veterans Commission Vice Chair Lee Alley, all of whom will say a few words and welcome home veterans and family members from all eras.

Lifetime VFW member Jeff Strong said the Welcome Home Day began as an event specific to Vietnam War veterans, then expanded to include all veterans.

Wyoming Veterans Commission Executive Director Larry Barttelbort further explained when Vietnam veterans returned home their commanding officers often advised them to change into civilian clothing, because in the United States the general attitude toward the war and those fighting in it was hostile and many soldiers were not welcomed home.

In 2011, Wyoming legislation passed to establish the Welcome Home Day for Vietnam veterans, and the first event was held same year. However, legislators have since had discussion about welcoming home all those who have served or are currently serving, so the Welcome Home was expanded.

Barttelbort noted Alley is a Vietnam veteran who served with honor and has made it his personal mission, as others have, to make sure all veterans and their families are thanked for their service and all soldiers are welcomed home.

To RSVP for the event, contact Strong at 921-2390.
