A Hot Springs County High School senior has been awarded the prestigious Daniels Scholarship for 2017.
Shaynie Bauer received notice of the award last week when the students were all called to Casper for what they thought was another round of interviews. Imagine their surprise when it was announced everyone in the room was a winner and the “interview” had been a ruse set up by the scholarship committee to add a little fun to the announcement.
Bauer is one of a select few from Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah who met all the principles and values of the fund’s founder, Bill Daniels.
She portrays strength of character, leadership potential, a willingness to give back to the community, academic performance and promise, and shows a well-rounded personality, all things Daniels found to be most important.
Daniels was one of the earliest pioneers in the cable television market and at one time owned the LA Lakers basketball team.
Upon his death, he requested all his finances be put into a fund that would provide scholarship opportunities for students in all the states he had worked so hard in. The Daniels Fund is one of the largest foundations in the Rocky Mountain Region.
The scholarship pays for all the costs of education after Bauer has used other scholarships she may be awarded. It is renewable for all four years of college and she may attend any college or university she wishes as long as her plan is to attain a Bachelors Degree. One of the requirements of the scholarship includes a work program.
Bauer has been named Valedictorian of the 2017 graduating class.
