The Lady Bobcat freshman-sophomore team finished up their first season in 3A competition with a respectable 8-10 record in spite of a rough tournament in Worland last Saturday.
Coach Ernie Mecca said Dani Jo Pebbles had her best game of the season in the 32-15 loss against Riverton Saturday, scoring eight points to lead the team.
In their 40-29 loss to Pinedale, Mecca said the girls got off to a slow start, only scoring five points the first half, but came out with renewed intensity the second half, outscoring Pinedale 24-20.
Unfortunately that was not enough to overcome the 15-point half time deficit.
The third game on Saturday was a little closer with the girls dropping the game to Cody 22-16.
The girls held a slim 12-6 lead at halftime as neither team could mount anything offensively.
“It was the third game of the day for both teams,” Mecca said. “Fatigue was a factor for everyone. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find the basket in the second half and came up a little short in a disappointing loss to end the girl’s season.”
Mecca said for their first season in high school, the girls did quite well with all the girls improving their performances.
Injuries created some issues and illness and role changes in the make-up of the team was a challenge for them, but the situations made for valuable learning experiences and created opportunities for other players to step up.
Looking at the averages for the season, the Lady Cats averaged 31 points per game with their opponents averaging 34 points against them.
Overall, McKenna Bomengen led the team in points per game with an average of 14 while Ashley McPhie led the team in free-throw shots, averaging 69 percent per game.
Other averages for the season include Sesi Jensen with 6.3 points per game, McPhie with 5.7, Maggie Jones averaged 5.5, Kelly Johnson 5.1 and Aspen Jensen 4.7 points per game.
Tahja Hunt had a 4.2 point average, followed by Pebbles with 3.1 per game, Audrey Axtell with two per game and Kaylee DeVries with .7 per game.
