Students from Thermopolis Middle School
recently competed at Northwest College in
Powell in the Mathcounts program, both individually
and as a team. The 10 students
competed against Lander, Lovell, and Powell
in four different rounds, the Sprint, Target,
Team and Countdown.
Josiah Butler, a seventh grader, scored sixth
overall and will be moving on to the state level
in Laramie this Saturday, March 4.
Each of the different rounds is slightly different
and has differing time constraints.
The Sprint round includes 30 math questions
and the student has 40 minutes to complete
them.
The Target round has just eight questions
which are distributed to the students a pair at
a time and they have six minutes to complete
each pair of problems.
In the Team round they are given 10 problems
and they work together for 20 minutes to
solve them. The top 25% of individuals, up to a
maximum of 10 students, then proceed to the
Countdown round where they compete headto-
head with oral math questions.
The TMS Mathcounts club has students
from fi fth through eighth grades and they have
been meeting every Friday night since October
to practice. The top 10 in the club were chosen
for the Mathcounts competition.
"Overall, we are very proud of our students
for all the hard work and effort they put forth,"
said coach Stephanie Czarobski, eighth grade
math teacher. "They did a great job this year,
and with such a young team we know they will
continue to improve every year."
Other coaches for the team include Emmy
Hergert, seventh grade math teacher and Catie
Deromedi, sixth grade math teacher.
Students who attended the competition in
Powell included Scotty Whipps, Owen Mc-
Cumber, Gavin Shumway, Lexi Overfi eld, and
Hannah Andreen, all sixth graders.
From the seventh grade class Josiah Butler
and Ryan Mosser competed in Powell and
eighth graders included Reagan Severance,
Elisa Weber and Maddie Stam.
