Work that began a few months back at the Hot Springs County Senior Center is nearing completion. Flooring which better matches the beams along the center's walls and ceilings was recently installed, and Executive Director Chanda Waddell said that is the end for the contractor work.
Waddell said people seem to really like the changes to the center, and she hasn't heard any negative comments.
There are still some touch-ups and cleaning to do, Waddell noted.
The next project is working to secure funds through a USDA grant, to replace tables and chairs in the dining area.
Following that, Waddell plans to get some money and grants together to remodel the center restrooms. On that work list is making the stalls a bit bigger to be compliant with the newest ADA regulations.
Further, she noted, the janitor's closet is currently located in the men's restroom, which can make things a bit awkward considering the majority of staff are women. Planned work includes removing that closet and increasing the size of the second janitor's room. There would also be a washer and dryer installed in the second room, allowing staff to wash their own rags and aprons rather than send them out to a service.
Waddell estimated it would take about $50,000 for the restroom and janitor room renovations. As for funding for the projects, she is exploring grant opportunities. She explained fundraising is for the operations budget. However, if they're extremely successful and the funds raised are over what is needed, she would certainly be happy for it and possibly put it toward renovations.
Right now, she noted, all of the fundraising money will be needed in the budget. "But you never know. Don't fence us in because we've surprised ourselves a couple times."
