Freshman win three at Buffalo

The freshman Lady Bobcat basketball team improved their season record to 6-1 with three wins over the weekend at the Buffalo Invitational.

Coach Ernie Mecca said the girls had balanced scoring against Lovell, with seven of the eight players contributing to the final score.

The Lady Cats came out on top, 46-24 against the Lady Bulldogs.

McKenna Bomengen led all the scorers with 20 points. Sesi Jensen added another 10 points, with Dani Jo Pebbles tipping in five, Audrey Axtell making four, Tahja Hunt added three, and Ashley McPhie scored two points for the game.

The second game on Saturday pitted the Lady Cats against Riverton with our girls coming out on top, 41-18.

“The girls easily handled a shorthanded Riverton squad in a physical game,” Mecca said.

Once again, Bomengen led the scoring with 15 points, followed by McPhie, who had her best game of the season, chipping in 10 points.

Others adding to the final buzzer were Hunt with five points, Sesi Jensen and Axtell, each with four points and Aspen Jensen with three points.

The final game of the day in Buffalo saw the girls facing Powell, the only team they have lost to this season.

They avenged that loss in spectacular form with a hard-fought battle, which resulted in an overtime win over the Panthers, 32-29.

Mecca said Hunt did an outstanding job defensively in the overtime period against Powell’s star player, holding her scoreless.

“Neither team could control the basketball or make a basket during the overtime until McKenna (Bomengen) hit a field goal late in the overtime period,” Mecca said. “That, plus a free throw gave us the three-point win.”

Bomengen finished the game with 10 points.

Rounding out the Lady Cats scoring was Sesi Jensen with six points, Pebbles and Hunt with five each, Aspen Jensen with four points and McPhie with two.

The girls will have a re-match on Friday against the Lander Lady Tigers in Lander.

Mecca said since moving up to 3A it will be the first night of the season where all three Lady Cat teams, freshmen, JV and varsity, will all play on the same night at the same place, which will create some quarter limitations for the girls who suit up for two squads.
