Experience another culture

This weekend, Thermopolis will host the Moscow Nights/Golden Gates dance troupe, featuring dancers from Russia and Georgia. It’s one of the many opportunities throughout the year when we can catch a brief glimpse into another culture, and we should take advantage of it.

Around town, several have stepped up and opened their doors to these dancers and musicians during their brief stay. While these folks will certainly get more understanding of the Russian and Georgian culture, in a small town we can expect their experiences and stories of the visitors will spread like fire and enhance the cultural understanding and experience for all.

But, it doesn’t just have to be those hosting that get the fringe benefits. If you plan to attend either of the performances, give yourself some time to visit with the troupe outside the show and ask some questions. How many times are you going to actually have a face-to-face with someone from another culture?

The same can be said of any of the performers who come to town, whether it be from Russia, Africa, Ireland, Scotland or even within Wyoming. These shows are more than just an opportunity to be entertained. They provide a chance to learn about the cultures of the world.

If you don’t make it to the Moscow Nights/Golden Gates, the ease of online information makes it possible to learn about them as well — and their sites have plenty to read — but it lacks the personal touch that comes from actual interaction. And if your schedule doesn’t allow time to make it to the dancers, keep your eyes and ears open for those opportunities to experience another culture, whether it be from halfway around the world or right in your own neighborhood.
