Make the season safe

If there’s one thing for certain in these past few weeks, it’s that the snow isn’t leaving anytime soon.

In addition to making sure your vehicle is equipped with an emergency kit, should you happen to get stuck, the best thing you can do is be more cautious while behind the wheel

Yes, there are plow vehicles that are going to regularly keep the streets and highways clear. Keep in mind those trucks might not get to your neck of the woods as quickly as you hope, but they do get there. Just like nearly every job, they have their priority and secondary workloads. Also remember the sand loads might not be dispersed as quickly as you think, and intersections are still plenty slick in spots.

Perhaps the best thing to do when going out in snowy conditions is to prepare mentally. Know you might have to start the car a few minutes earlier to get it warmed up. Take into account extra time to get to your destination — you might know how long it takes to get across town following the regular speed limits, but those limits are for ideal conditions not slick or snow blown roads. Slow down, and understand slowing, as well as accelerating will take some time — good to know when coming up on stop signs, red lights, school busses or hills.

For those who can, switch to winter tires for better traction and control. With regard to tires, air pressure should be checked regularly as cold weather can lower it significantly.

One of the most important general rules is not to drive intoxicated, but it has a higher level of urgency in a time when alcohol is used to celebrate and — for the humbugs — make the holidays a bit more bearable. If you do plan to drink, have a designated driver and a plan to get home safely.

Enjoy the flakes — ‘tis the season for it — and take steps to make sure this holiday season is a safe one.
