Those looking for help dealing with their addictive behaviors can check out a free self-help program for those who have chosen or are considering abstinence from such behaviors, whether they are substance abuse or addictive activities.
The Self-Management and Recovery Training (SMART) program is now being offered in Hot Springs County. SMART is a nation-wide, non-profit network of abstinence-based self-help groups that use cognitive-behavioral methods of behavioral change. SMART teaches everyone how to take back the power of choice, how to be self-reliant and change their way of thinking. Addiction is a cycle that involves more than just the actual habit.
Bobbi Kobbe, who has facilitated the SMART program in Thermopolis since October, said the program is a recognized alternative to traditional 12-step programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. Kobbe noted specifically that SMART is not faith-based, adding some people might shy away from AA and NA because of their feelings about God. Raised in Powell, she is aware of the addiction problem in the area.
“SMART is not spiritual healing and is very different from the traditional 12-step approaches,” she said. “Instead of labeling people as having a disease, being powerless, in denial or in need of lifelong meeting attendance, SMART recovery emphasizes self-responsibility, self-motivation and self-discipline as the primary means of stopping one’s troublesome substance use and addictive behaviors.”
Kobbe added it’s about retraining one’s self to cope with problems and enjoy life without substance use.
A SMART support groups is currently being held her every Monday evening at 7 p.m. at the H.O.P.E. Agency. Depending on group attendance and demand, more meetings could be scheduled through the week. Anyone interested is welcome to drop by, or contact Kobbe at 307-480-0567.
