Hostetter happy to be teaching at HSCHS

by Cindy Glasson

Whether we realize it or not, most of us use mathematics almost every day and Jessica Hostetter, the new high school math teacher, is there to get our students ready.

Hostetter came from Texas originally and attended college at Laramie County Community College and the University of Wyoming. Her student teaching was completed in Gillette.

She and her husband Drew were married just a few months ago and the search was on for where they wanted to be and where Hostetter wanted to teach.

She received an offer from another school district in Wyoming, but in the end, she and her husband chose Thermopolis as it is equidistant between both sets of family.

"We feel like this is home," she said.

Hostetter said she's always been good at math and had a great teacher in high school that influenced her a lot, leading to her choice in career path.

"I really relate better to the older kids," she said. "They have the basics and we can take off running."

Something Hostetter has found different now from when she was in high school is the lack of "drill til you kill".

"We used to drill problems over and over," she said. "Here, its student centered. Once the basics are out of the way we can get into the fun stuff, conceptual ideas rather than just the same stuff over and over."
