Let's go Cats

I’ve never been one to play sports, at least for a school team. My athletic experience in my younger years consisted of playing soccer for the local YMCA, and a bit of roller hockey at the local rink and baseball games in the street with the neighborhood kids — we were fortunate to live on one of those streets that didn’t see much traffic, and the drivers who did were mostly courteous enough to wait for us to finish a play before getting too impatient.

During middle school and high school, that sports participation dwindled down to near nothing. In fact, outside of Physical Education, playing trombone at high school football games a few months and as the manager of the cross-country team, I didn’t really see much beyond the classroom. Instead, I preferred the lure of armchair sports, and was more interested in getting a job.

But that doesn’t mean my love for watching sports diminished. Aside from helping my brothers when they asked, on the aforementioned football and cross-country teams, I really enjoyed attending games and cheering on my hometown Bulldogs.

With the fall sports getting underway across the country, of course I’ll be watching and listening in to college and NFL football when I can, but nothing beats the excitement of watching athletes compete live, so I’m looking forward to watching at least a few meets, matches and games this fall from the stands, cheering the Bobcats to a (hopefully) win.

I encourage anyone looking for something to do in the fall afternoons and evenings to take a look at the athletics calendar for inspiration.

To the runners, tacklers, kickers, drivers and spikers heading up the teams, I also encourage you to cheer on your teammates both on and off the field. You have the opportunity to make your team, and the season, a great one.
