New school year just around the corner

Summer vacation for students is winding down while the new school year is approaching.

Parents are beginning to receive supply lists via mail for Thermopolis Middle School and Hot Springs County High School and Ralph Witters Elementary students’ supply lists can be found online at hotsprings1.org.

While school doesn’t begin until Thursday, Aug. 25 and the supply lists may seem daunting at times, it is good for parents to have plenty of time to gather all of the necessary things to make this year a success for all students.

I’m sure when parents and students receive these supply lists, they may feel as if it is far too soon — in the same way that it seems too soon when retail stories start bringing out the Christmas candy before the Halloween candy, or at the same time. It still doesn’t make sense. But the supply lists do make sense.

Parents are given ample time to shop for all the items needed for their children, without having to necessarily buy it all at once, and without having to freak out when they can’t find something at a particular store.

Also, kids, don’t fret. It may feel as if your summer is being cut short, but it isn’t. The supply list is merely giving you a heads up to enjoy your remaining free time before you do have to return to class to do all those things you may not enjoy. You will have to get up early. You will have to do your best. And when you’re really honest with yourself, it is enjoyable at times. Though this may be coming from members of an older generation, believe us, education is important and it will shape what you eventually will become. You still have the chance to be anything you want to be. Take that chance by the reigns and make it happen. We all believe in you.

OK, enough about what we know will be your successes. Break out your sunscreen, your swimwear, your super soakers and your slip n’ slides. Sleep in. Annoy your parents (we know you are because we once did it too). Ride your bikes all over town. Play at parks and hang out with your friends. Enjoy your free time as a wild, free kid for four more weeks.

Parents, the best advice we can give is to buy a little a time, so as not to become overwhelmed. We know you want the best for your children, and we have no doubt that with your help, every student will succeed in the 2016-2017 school year.
