Car rally rolls into town

Hot Springs State Park will again be the site for the annual Hot Spot Car Rally this Father’s Day weekend, June 18 and 19.

Hot Spot Car Rally committee member Dick Howe said when the show started 24 years ago, it was about people bringing out their favorite set of wheels, no matter the vehicle’s age or condition. Even though it now brings in more classics and antiques, he encourages everyone to bring their favorite vehicles out. Wall art trophies will be awarded to category winners.

The first rally was at Big T Drive-In on Shoshoni, and featured 34 cars. The event has grown over the years, bringing in 140 or more some years. Howe didn’t know yet how many would show this year; he hopes for 140-150 or more, but added 60-70 would also be a good turnout. Concessions will be set up.

Three pedal cars, sponsored by Owl Lumber, Finishing Touches and Wind River Casino will be raffled off as well. The cars will be on display at Storyteller and Owl Lumber.

Tickets for chances to win the cars are $5 each or three for $10, and are available at the pedal car location or from committee members Stephanie and Jason Owens, Shay and Forrest Coleman, Ryan Georgius, Dick and Sandy Howe, Jim and Dolly Daniels, Barry and Rhonda Nelson, Patti Jeunehomme, Krystal Spatol, Toddi Darlington and Tim Arthur.

The rally will take place at the area around the Kiwanis shelter, plaza, boat dock and Tepee Pools; the space will be blocked off at about 6 a.m. on the 18th. An informal poker run the same day is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Participants will travel to various locations around town, but must return by 4 p.m. No hands will be let out prior to the start of the run.

A parade the 18th, beginning at 4:30 p.m., will show off the cars as they travel from the park, along Sixth to Thermopolis Rehabilitation and Care Center and back.

On the 19th, cars will be on display at the park from 8 a.m.-3 p.m., though Howe noted there is not a set check in time and anyone who wants to bring a car to show within those hours is welcome.
