Democratic caucus evenly split

Hot Springs County held its Democratic Caucus on Saturday at the Hot Springs County Library, resulting in one delegate representing Bernie Sanders and one delegate representing Hillary Clinton at the Wyoming Democratic Convention on May 28.

Local delegates and alternates who will represent each candidate at the state level will be announced later this week, after receiving approval from the state.

There were no votes for Roque “Rocky” De La Feunte and no uncommitted voters at the county caucus.

“I was pleased with the turnout,” temporary caucus chair Howie Samelson said.

An overwhelming majority of Hot Springs County democrats vocalized interest in creating a Democratic County Committee also.

According to the Associated Press, Sanders won 56 percent of the vote in the state and Clinton won 44 percent, based on county caucus results. However, due to the formula used to determine caucus winners and delegates for each candidate, both candidates received half of the state’s 14 delegates.

At the Wyoming Democratic Convention on May 28, seven delegates will represent Sanders and seven delegates will represent Clinton. Based on other primary and caucus results throughout the nation, Clinton now holds 1,305 delegates and Sanders holds 1,086 delegates.
