Hot Springs County High School freshman Barbara Jean Kissel has received plenty of congratulations after tying for first place at the FFA district competition in Worland March 8.
For her piece, Kissel chose a recitation of the FFA Creed, which all members believe in. She was inspired after an assignment to memorize the creed; in that assignment, she only missed two words, meaning she qualified in doing it. She then decided to participate in the district contest.
Upon announcement of her name as one of the first place finishers, Kissel said she felt as if she was going to faint.
"It was a pretty amazing feeling," she said.
Kissel attended the Regional competition on March 15 at Powell, where she recited the creed again. Kissel placed fourth at the competition.
Agriculture Teacher and FFA Advisor Britton Van Heule explained Kissel joined members from Ten Sleep and Basin to attends Regional, as three members from Districts attend.
Kissel is a really hard worker, Van Heule said, adding that her work is really paying off.
Other members attending the district competition were Kaitlyn Schmuck and Emmie Coyne, who placed fifth and sixth respectively in extemporaneous speaking and Chandler Maddock who placed seventh in the FFA Creed speaking contest.
