Sandy was born November 28, 1930, in Daniel, Wyo., to Wiley and Dollie (Mayfield) Sanford. He grew up in Thermopolis, where he graduated from Hot Springs County High School in 1949. He enlisted in the Wyoming National Guard, where he served in the 300th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, Battery A. He fought on the front lines in Korea, alongside many other young men from Thermopolis.
When the Korean War ended, he returned to Thermopolis, where he married Frances Davidson in 1953. He was employed by Bethlehem Steel Supply for more than 30 years, working first in Thermopolis, then Casper, then Tioga, N.D. He was transferred back to Casper in 1972, where he and Fran remained. After he retired, they organized gambling junkets to Nevada, which they enjoyed very much. Later, they enjoyed spending winters in Arizona.
Sandy enjoyed gardening all his life, joking that he should probably have been a farmer. He will be remembered for the joy he expressed in growing things, his easy smile, and his gentle demeanor. He was a loving man who will be missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his daughters, Miki (Bob) Jones and Suzi (Guy) Thompson; his sister, Lillian Torrey; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including Debbie Hirz-Smith.
Sandy was preceded in death by Fran, his wife of 61 years; son, Bradley; parents; sisters, Ellen Sanderlin, Darlene Sorenson, and Thelma Smith; and his brother, Wayne.
A memorial service was held at Meadow Wind Assisted Living January 29. The family requests donations in Sandy’s memory be made to Central Wyoming Hospice and Transitions. To leave a special message for Sandy’s family please visit http://www.newcomercasper.com.
