Commissioners, fair board discuss roof issues

During last week’s meeting of the Hot Springs County Commissioners, Martin Bader, Tom Christensen and Arnold Pennoyer brought forward concerns about the fairground’s Multi-Purpose (MP) Building roof, which was replaced by Atlas Roofing in 2013.

The MP building was in need of a new roof a few years after an addition was added to allow for more room inside. The old portion of the building was in need of repairs because of age and leaking problems throughout. It was decided to put a new roof on the whole building to solve the leaking issues and add more insulation to help with heating costs.

Since the new roof was installed, Bader and Pennoyer noted the roof leaks because the ridge cap has not been sealed. Ice guards, used to prevent sheets of snow and ice from falling off the building, have also not been installed. The falling snow and ice is a hazard to patrons going in and out of the building via the west side doors.

Ice and snow buildup has also caused the building’s gutter system to be severely damaged on the west side of the building. There is damage to the east side gutters as well but does not present a hazard to patrons as there are no doors on that side of the building.

Commissioner Tom Ryan will discuss the issues with Atlas Roofing. All repairs should be covered under the contractor’s warranty. Warning signs and pylons have been placed around the building until repairs can be made.
