Lady Cats win both at home

The Lady Cats basketball team defeated Big Piney 45-35, but they had to work for the win. Coach Cory Sova gave Big Piney credit for playing hard for 32 minutes, and that they are well coached. The Lady Cats had some trouble with passes during the game. "We had too many bad passes on our part, we need to clean that up," Sova said.

The first half of the game did not provide the two point shot spread Sova was after, only netting two of the 17 points during that time. "That will not cut against a quality team," explained Sova.

During the first 14 possessions, the girls missed eight of their shots and gave the ball away six times to Big Piney. "We have to get to work in practice and get better every day" said Sova. While the girls provided an "OK' defense, Coach Sova knows that they could have been better.

The second half definitely brought a better team out and the girls worked together as one unit. Haley McDermott scored nine points, while Jessica Schierkolk made eight points. Makayla George had seven points, Korey Smith made six points and Randi Elisson had five points. Ashlynn Weber scored five points, Jules Ward scored three points and Lizzy Lofink had two points. With a good balance in scoring, McDermott had seven of eight shots from the free throw line and three steals, while Schierkolk had eight rebounds and three steals. Elisson took seven rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Lofink and J. Ward also had three steals.

Once again the Lady Cats showed there ferocity against Meeteetse by taking the game 63-21. "Meeteetse has some nice young players and they did some good things but were simply overmatched by our aggressive kids," Sova explained. The girls played well during the game but they still have plenty of work ahead of them. "We played some great team ball but we still aren't seeing the open player early enough." Sova explained.

The Lady Cats shot well from the inside and at mid-range, they did not attempt any three point shots , showing their willingness to get the ball into a premium scoring position.

Melissa Ward scored 15 points, Schierkolk made 11 points, George, Smith, and Elisson all scored seven points. Weber made six points, McDermott and Mary Ryan finished with four points. J. Ward made two points. M. Ward shot well with six out of eight and added four rebounds. Schierkolk also had a nice game with good shooting five out of seven and had three assists. George was a force in the game, shooting well three out five and adding five rebounds. Smith pitched in with four rebounds and two assists. Elisson also added four rebounds. Weber knocked down three mid range shots, while Lofink lead us with three steals. J. Ward and McDermott pestered their ball handlers and disrupted the opposing teams offense. Finally Mary Ryan was able to get some extended varsity minutes and hit two out of three shots and added three assists on nice passes.

The upcoming game against Greybull has some challenges that the Lady Cats will have to overcome. Greybull has a high level of defense, and some size to their team. "We absolutely have to rebound better than we have been and cannot be sloppy with the ball," said Sova. Saturday the team heads to Lovell. "They have some big time weapons who are athletic and very good players," explained Sova about the upcoming game.

The Friday game against Greybull will take place here at the Bobcat gym at 5:30 p.m. and the Saturday game against Lovell will also start at 5:30 p.m. in Lovell.
