On the Record policy

It is the Independent Record’s policy that all people arrested or cited under the “Accidents,” “Sheriff’s office” or “Police calls” in the On the Record section are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Fire department

Monday, Jan. 11

10:25 a.m. Firemen responded to a structure fire at 541 South Yellowstone.

Sheriff’s department

Tuesday, Jan. 5

12:06 p.m. A report of a collision between two vehicles at the Children’s Resource Center. One vehicle collided with another while backing out.

Wednesdays, Jan. 6

9:27 a.m. Chance Jacobson was arrested without incident for child abuse.

1:43 p.m. Deputy provided traffic control for a cattle crossing on Highway 120 West.

Thursday, Jan. 7

9:30 a.m. Report of lost or stolen money. A female resident reported she had $1,000 worth of cash and checks in a white envelope. After transferring to another vehicle for an out of town trip she was unable to find her money. After having a friend unsuccessfully search her car she made a report to the law enforcement center.

Police department

Tuesday, Jan. 5

7:51 a.m. Officers attempted to locate a vehicle that had been stolen in Montana. A request had been made to search for the vehicle in Thermopolis. The vehicle was later found in Riverton.

11:18 a.m. Police officers executed a search warrant for stolen property. Officers found the property during the search. Amber Steadman 36, and Rick Brill, 30, were both charged with larceny.

4:42 p.m. A female resident reported she received a call from an unknown male. The male calling from an 864 number was vulgar and rude. The responding officer attempted to call the number back but there was no answer.

8:21 p.m. A caller reported their neighbors were being noisy. The reporting party was concerned about the neighbor’s children and the activity that may be going on. The responding officer attempted to make contact with the neighbor. No one answered the door.

Wednesday, Jan. 6

8:10 a.m. Report from a crossing guard working a crosswalk in the area of Springview Street of the driver of a white truck failing to obey the guard’s posted stop sign. The responding officer located the truck and gave the driver a warning.

1:46 p.m. A female resident received a call from a male who asked if she knew who he was. The female guessed it was her grandson and called out his name.

The male informed her he was her grandson and he was just in a bad wreck and needed money to keep from going to jail. The woman quickly figured out it was a scam and hung up on the male.

Thursday, Jan. 7

12:38 p.m. An officer provided a civil standby for a couple during a separation. The officer kept the peace while the male party removed items from the residence.

Saturday, Jan. 9

7:11 a.m. A man reported his girlfriend was suicidal. The responding officer found the female was packing and attempting to leave and was verbally arguing with the male. The officer informed the male party the female was an adult and able to make her own decisions.

4:38 p.m. Report of a vehicle with a horse trailer parked on Sixth Street. The reporting party said there was a horse in the trailer and they were sure it had been there for almost 24 hours. The vehicle was gone when the officer arrived.

Sunday, Jan. 10

12:42 a.m. Report of a person driving a vehicle over a mail box and several trees in the area of East Fremont and then fleeing the scene by speeding away in reverse. The responding officer located the vehicle parked with the dome light on and the door open.

The officer knocked on the door at the residence were the vehicle was parked. After some discussion with the male party that answered the door, the officer determined it was a second male in the house who had been driving.

After interviewing Jerry Merritt, 25, the officer arrested him for leaving the scene of an accident, failure to provide insurance, interference and speeding.

While Merritt was being processed at the Law Enforcement Center, a warrant was found for nonpayment of child support and it was added to the charges.

Monday, Jan. 11

8:56 p.m. A truck being driven on Sixth Street had a tire fall off.
