Lady Cats show promise at Glenrock

The Lady Bobcats traveled to Glenrock for their season opener at the Herder Classic Friday and Saturday.

"We simply have to play smarter" coach Cory Sova said of the varsity Lady Cats performance during their game against Tongue River.

The aggressive nature of the Lady Bobcats against Tongue River lead to a number of fouls during the game. The Bobcats ended up being defeated 31-27.

This is the first varsity action for many of the girls Sova noted.

Quarter scores for the game were Tongue River 4-9-9-9 and Thermopolis 3-13-6-5.

Top scorers for the Lady Cats were Korey Smith 8, Haley McDermott 5, Ashlynn Weber 5, Makayla George 3, Melissa Ward 3, Jules Ward 2 and Jessica Schierkolk 1. 

Thermopolis had 24 turnovers and Tongue River had 28.

Smith and Schierkolk each had 9 rebounds. McDermott had 2 assists and 4 steals.

The Lady Cats made 7/20 free throws and 9/42 field goals  (7/31 for twos and 2/11 for three's).

The girls held Tongue River to only 6 field goals but they went to the line 36 times and made 19.

The Lady Cats came out and held their own against Big Horn, holding the lead half way through the first quarter with 11-2. They then the failed to score again until there was two minutes left in the first half.

"The Big Horn game was a little better than Friday's game but not ideal," said Sova. "We hurt ourselves with 26 turnovers, with many being unforced."

Quarter scores for the game were Big Horn 12-16-12-10 and Thermopolis 11-4-14-5.

Top scorers for the Lady Cats were Randi Elisson 11, Schierkolk 8, McDermott 4, J. Ward 3, George 3, Smith 3 and M. Ward 2.

The Cats were 7/18 from the free throw line this game with Big Horn going 17/28.

The girls shot 9/27 for twos and 3/7 for threes. Lizzy Lofink had 5 assists and 2 assists. Elisson stepped up and added 7 rebounds to her 11 points.

The game against Wright was a great game for the Lady Cats. They showed the Panthers who was in charge by taking the game 43-40.

Sova commented, "We played quite well except for most of the last quarter. We had a 17 point lead at one point and Wright, being very athletic, chipped away at us. The game wasn't in doubt but they definitely made a run at us."

Quarter scores for the game were Wright 14-4-4-18 and Thermopolis 12-10-12-9.

The Lady Cats took care of the ball much better with only 12 turnovers.

Top scorers were Elison 10, George 7, McDermott 7, J. Ward 5, Weber 4, M. Ward 4, Schierkolk 3 and Smith 3. Elison had 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 0 turnovers, M. Ward had 4 rebounds, George had no turnovers, Lofink had 5 assists, J. Ward had 3 steals and Weber had 4 rebounds.

The junior varsity team beat Tongue River 45-10, but lost to Big Horn 32-25.

"These girls played extremely hard and we were really pleased how they competed during opening weekend," said Sova

The Freshman game vs Worland scheduled for Thursday has been cancelled by Worland.

"I was pleased with how hard the girls played, we just need to stay with it and keep working with all phases of the game," Sova remarked.

The Lady Cats play at home in the ShoOpolis Tourney against Upton Friday at 11:30 a.m. and Cokeville at 8:30 p.m. On Saturday, they travel to Shoshoni and play Little Snake River at 3 p.m.
