Gladys Jones

Gladys Augusta Nichols Jones passed away July 25, 2015, at New Horizon Care Center in Lovell, Wyo. Gladys was born near Lysite, Wyo. on September 13, 1929, the daughter of James Lee Nichols Sr. and Susie Parm Nichols.

Gladys grew up on the family homestead on Bridger creek attending schools in Shoshone before moving to the Lucerne area near Thermopolis where she graduated from high school in 1948. After high school Gladys lived with her sister Helen Hill and worked at the Coca-Cola bottling company.

Gladys married Andrew Charles Jones on February 26, 1949, after he had returned to the Lucerne area after returning from World War II in 1945. Gladys followed Andy’s work as a lineman across Wyoming and South Dakota. Gladys and Andy had three children: Judith born 1950, Patricia born 1952 and Robert born 1957. 

In 1958 he became a rural electric lineman for the REA in Worland where they remained.

Gladys returned to work when her daughters went to high school. 

Gladys worked as a meat cutter for Simon’s grocery store and at Cold Storage and last the dietary aide at Bethesda Care Center. Some of her children’s fondest memories are of the family on horseback with the Washakie Rider drill team, 4-H and trail rides. Gladys loved horses, wildlife, plants, rock hunting, gardening, sewing for her daughters and music. She played the clarinet, saxophone, violin, piano and accordion. She also had a love of drawing.

Gladys is survived by her sister-in-law Marvilla Nichols; children Judy (Ray) Lawrence of Powell, Patricia Jones of Powell, Robert Jones of Worland; grandchildren Julie (Tim) Miller of Powell, Jamie Fauver of Powell, Starla Tronstad (Dan) Park of Albuquerque, N.M., LaRae Tronstad of Austin, Texas, Andy (Kim) Lawrence of Williston, N. D., and Brock (Juanita) Lawrence of Cheyenne; great-grandchildren Andrea Lawrence, Joey Lake, Joshua Fauver, Isaiah Fauver, Augustus Miller, Katelynn Miller, Lucas Miller and Asher Park; and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Gladys is preceded in death by her husband; nephews, Patrick Nichols, Jimmy Barham; infant brother William Nichols; her parents; and siblings Helen (Ed) Hill, James (Lucy) Nichols, Burney Nichols, Luther (Pat) Nichols, Julie (Bob) Barham, Mary (Hugh) Vass; brother-in-law Donald (Lorene) Jones and grandson-in-law Daniel Fauver.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held August 20 at 10 a.m. at Thompson Funeral Home in Powell with burial to follow at the Riverside Cemetery in Thermopolis. A family reunion is planned for the fall in Thermopolis to share pictures and memories.
