Bobcat track teams headed to state

There is just one weekend left in what has been a remarkable season for the Bobcat boys and girls track teams.

Last weekend, the team traveled to Lander for the Regional Championships, with the boys team placing second and the girls taking third.

Thirty-one personal records were achieved.

"It was a great regional meet," said head coach Ernie Mecca. "The kids competed well. The number of personal records shows just how well."

The question now becomes whether or not the numbers from Regionals will transfer over to the state meet.

"You can't always guess," Mecca said. "I will say the boys are in the hunt to defend their state title and I could see the girls in the top four.

"But you know, it's a new meet and a new day. On paper, it looks really good, but that doesn't always transfer over."

For example, Mecca said to take a look at Lyman and Big Piney, tying for first in Lander on the girl's side.

"I could see Big Piney having a realistic shot," he said.

However, if you look at the boys side, Kemmerer took first at Regionals, but Mecca doesn't see them placing above fourth at State.

"In Lander they won on depth, not quality," he said. "In our case, we have the quality. We're not the favorites going in, Burns is, but I see us in the hunt for the title."

Mecca said the Regional meet is always bittersweet.

"We have some athletes that have worked really hard," he said. "They've put everything into it, they just couldn't get to that state qualifying standard.

"You know, I'd still take those 31 personal records any time."

Ten girls and nine boys will be traveling to Casper for the State Meet which starts today (Thursday) and runs through Saturday.
