The Thermopolis Middle School football team travelled to play at Lovell last Saturday, coming away with a 38-20 win. Coach Shane Corpening said he saw improvement on the team from when they played Worland on Sept. 20. “I thought, without a doubt, we played our best game of the year, our most complete.” Offensively, he said, the team played really crisp. Defensively, he added, there were times when they played solid and others where they missed a couple reads and tackles. Lovell, he said, als...

Lady Bobcat volleyball was busy last weekend with two home games, Friday against Buffalo and Saturday against Douglas. Although they dropped both matches in three games, coach Shannon Hill said she saw a lot of positives coming off the weekend. "We focused a lot of our practices this week on serve/receive, therefore we struggled a little bit with our offense," she said. "Our unforced errors were what lost this match (Buffalo) for us. "We are very evenly matched with Buffalo, but could never...
This Saturday Thermopolis will be home to the Bobcat Cross Country Invite, beginning at 10 a.m. at the golf course. Coach Stepahnie Metz said this week the Bobcats have been focusing on the mental aspects of dealing with hills. The high school runners will have hills frequently, hitting the big hill once and then more throughout the course. It’s important, Metz said, for them to stay in the mindset they can do it and finish hard. For the middle school runners, she said, this course will be the l...
Though last Friday’s football game against Mountain View wound up with a 31-8 loss for the Bobcats, Coach Matthew McPhie is proud of the young men and the effort they put in against the defending state champ team. McPhie pointed out that just a few years back Thermopolis had a 45-0 loss against Mountain View, so they are definitely improving. The bobcats did well in the first half, McPhie said, keeping it a close, 7-2 game, though a costly turnover on the five-yard line kept them from taking t...
The Thermopolis Middle School football team had a bit of a rough start to the season, coach Shane Corpening said, with their first two games resulting in 40-point losses to Shoshoni and Lander. "After that," the coach said, "I felt like we had a turning point in our season, a complete 180-degree turnaround. We've been a different team." Part of that, he said, is having Roedy Farrell back and healthy to help the team. The Bobcats saw victory against Rocky Mountain on Saturday, Sept. 15, and most...
Thermopolis Middle School seventh and eighth grade volleyball teams are getting a lot of court time for both the A and B teams. Head coach Aimee Kay said the teams are continuing to work on a complicated system. “We are improving on transitioning from offense to defense,” she said. “My hope is that having a solid understanding of these concepts and skills will set them up for an easier transition to the high school level of play.” Kay added their serves are still a struggle and they don’t get a...

Day one left the Bobcats in a three-way tie for second in the...
The Bobcats traveled to Moorcroft and got a road conference win this past weekend, shutting out the Wolves 52-0. Coach Matt McPhie stated, “The team took care of the ball early, and jumped out to a 14-0 lead after the first quarter. During the second quarter the team exploded for 38 points which included some great offense and defense to take a commanding 52-0 lead at half time.” McPhie noted the second half was played under the running clock rule. “Chandler Maddock scored 4 touchdowns and ran t...
The girls high school and middle school teams had a strong showing last Thursday at the Lander Invite, with each team taking third place. Coach Stephanie Metz was excited for the team finishes because of the size of the teams we have this season. Regarding the middle school girls, she said younger team members like Hanna Hill, Sofia Gerber and Kendall Bradshaw have really taken off and supported older members Jayda Griffin, Dazlynn Hunt and Elizabeth Peterson. The same is true of the high...
The Lady Bobcat volleyball team had their first conference match-up of the season last Friday against Newcastle at home. Coach Shannon Hill said the girls came out ready to play that night, started out leading and kept it that way the entire match. "I was really proud of the girls for keeping their intensity and not letting down, even in game three," Hill said. "We really focused on consistency in practice last week and our girls followed through and played the way they know how." The Lady Cats...

Thermopolis Middle School volleyball teams had their ups and downs this past week according to head coach Aimee Kay. The teams are playing well and Kay said the girls are getting more comfortable with running the 5-1 line and switching from offense to defense, but there is still room for improvement. Last week they were introduced to hitting defense and Kay is starting to see the girls get where they need to be when they need to be there. Their serves are improving, too, but they are still the...
The Bobcat Golf Team hosted their home tournament last weekend, the final tournament before the State 2A Tournament in Newcastle this weekend. The Thermopolis football team suffered a 47-16 loss Friday night in their matchup against Buffalo. Coach Matt McPhie stated, "We had some costly turnovers early in the game and found ourselves quickly behind. We've had a couple of really tough and talented opponents these first two weeks and I'm convinced we're going to come out better in the end because of what we've learned in these contests. "Buffalo gave us some trouble in space and we need to do a better job of tackling and taking angles...

Next up was Torrington, where the girls took on two more losses, 17-21 and 17-21. Against Torrington, Johnson added six kills and one block to her stats and Ashley McPhie posted an...
This past weekend saw two competitions for the Thermopolis cross country team, with runners at the Berry Bryant Invite at Riverton on Thursday and the Michelle Ludwig Invite at Sheridan on Saturday. Coach Stephanie Metz noted the middle school runners didn’t get to compete at Riverton due to time, and the meet was a difficult one due to the heat. Though there weren’t any personal records, there were some great placings with the high school girls all finishing in the top 20. Metz said a good thi...
Thermopolis Middle School's volleyball season is underway and last week was a very busy week for them, playing Cloud Peak on Thursday, Meeteetse on friday and then Powell and Cody at a quad meet on Saturday. Head Coach Aimee Kay said last year, when they played Cloud Peak, the girls were beat by quite a bit, but she was pleased to see that they have closed the gap significantly with their level of play. "The girls are playing a 5-1 this year," Kay said, "and they are learning defensive positions...
The Bobcat golf team went over the mountain last Thursday for the Buffalo Invitational Golf Tourney. Coach Joey Johnson said the Buffalo course is the hardest the team has played so far this year and their first day scores reflected that. Trees were an issue for the Cats on the Buffalo course, the greens ran very fast and were hard to reach, proving a challenge to the young team. Day one scores were Hardy Johnson, 74; Jeffry Clark, 101; Lee Grimm, 140; Kyle Roessing, 110; Will Clark, 133 and...
The Bobcat football team was dealt a heavy blow last Friday with a 43-0 loss on the road against Big Horn. Though the offense still wasn’t able to put some points on the board, McPhie said the boys played both sides of the ball better, allowing only a couple more scores the remaining three quarters. Both the offense and defense got settled into the game after that f...
