    Thermopolis Middle School students came home with a second place overall during the recent Mathcounts competition at North West College in Powell, qualifying them to advance to the state competition in Laramie in March.     The Bobcats started the largest invitational wrestling event in Wyoming, Riverton's Ron Thon Invitational, just the way they like, with six straight wins from their three varsity entries.     The Hot Springs Country Recreation District is opening registration for its Start Smart Sports Program. It is offered to all kids ages three to five years old for basketball, soccer and baseball. This is a noncompetitive, one-on-one with the child’s parent, which focuses on developing fundamentals of each sport to teach the basics of each sport.     The varsity Lady Bobcat basketball team split a pair of games last weekend, first in Buffalo on Friday and then in Big Piney on Saturday. Friday’s game against the Lady Buffs was a heartbreaker, losing a tough game 40-42.     Some extra work on the team's defensive game plan brought great results as the Bobcat boys basketball team racked up a pair of wins over the weekend, beating Newcastle 44-32 and Douglas, 46-43.     The Bobcats spotted the Cody Broncs 30 points in forfeits on Tuesday, Jan. 21, then proceeded to win six of eight matches on the mat but they lost the home dual to Cody 42-34.     The Lady Cats varsity team took a couple of rough losses over the weekend, first to Newcastle on Friday, 59-41 and to Douglas on Saturday, 63-23. In the Newcastle game, Ashley McPhie dropped in 12 points as well as pulling down five rebounds and added three steals to her stats.     The middle school boys basketball teams took on Lovell Saturday with the eighth grade boys having home court advantage and the seventh graders playing in Lovell.     Cole Christenson, Roedy Farrell, Logan Cole and Reily Shaffer brought home championships from the Don Runner Invitational wrestling tournament in Pavillion.     The Lady Bobcats had a successful weekend at home winning two out of three of their games during a tournament that included Shoshoni, Rocky Mountain and Wyoming Indian.
