Over the Memorial Day weekend, the parking lot at Hot Springs County High School was a place to be for the Hot City Summer Slam 3-on-3 basketball tournament. Though Thermopolis has hosted the tournament a number of years, 2016 marks the first time it was headed up by the Bobcat Boosters. The Booster Club's sponsorship means all the money generated stayed in the community. On top of that, vendors were all local clubs, organizations or concessionaires. Eight boys and eight girls from Hot Springs County High School traveled to Casper to compete at the Track and Field State Championships May 19-21. Coach Ernie Mecca commended both teams for making a tremendous effort during the three-day meet. The boys' team won runner up, taking a total 83 points, and made 11 personal records, one state record and two school records. It was another weekend of broken records and high scoring for the Bobcats, as they competed at the Regional Track Championships in Lander last Friday and Saturday. The boys team came home champions, winning with a total of 124 points. The boys 4x100 Relay team of Domanic Jensen, Cody Bjorhus, Tyler Cornwell and Jacob Hart set the school record for the third time, and the regional meet record, with a first place finish of 44.28. The Hot Springs County High School Bobcat golf team competed in the 2A Conference in Douglas on Friday and Saturday. In addition to the Hot Springs County High School boys track team winning the Regional Championships at Lander, one senior came away with some additional recognition. Tyler Cornwell was presented the Winford Mower award during the regional track meet. The award is a high honor naming him as the top 1A/2A athlete in the Big Horn Basin, not just in track but overall in high school sports. Last Thursday, several Thermopolis Middle School Track members traveled to Lander to compete in the Best of the Best Meet. Coach Kent Hessenthaler stated, "One incredible result was that Logan Cole threw the discus over 146 feet - that was incredible. This Friday, May 20, marks the registration deadline for the Hot City Summer Slam 3-on-3 basketball tournament over Memorial Day weekend. On Friday, the Hot Springs County High School Track and Field Team competed in Thermopolis for the Bobcat Invite. Coach Ernie Mecca expressed his appreciation to the members of the school community and the town for helping at the meet. Jonah Cook was just playing a leisure game of golf with his dad on April 23 at the Thermopolis Golf Course when he got a hole in one on his second hole. Cook attends Western Wyoming Community College in Rock Springs. He graduated from Hot Springs County High School in 2014. While in high school, Cook played on the golf team but he does not play on a college team, he said. "These days I just play golf as a hobby," he said.
