    Two local students have qualified to compete at the world’s largest junior high rodeo. Jase Longwell, a seventh grade student from Thermopolis Middle School, and McCoy Longwell, a sixth grade student from Risen Son Christian School, have earned positions on the Wyoming National Junior High rodeo team and will travel to Lebanon, Tenn.     This Saturday marks the first of three team roping events being hosted at the Hot Springs County Fairgrounds by Durbin Creek Ranch. The three events will allow members of the American Cowboys Team Roping Association (ACTRA) a chance to qualify for the Big Horn Chapter ACTRA finals in September at the Cottonwood Equestrian Center in Silesia, Mont.     The Hot Springs County Recreation Department baseball program is underway, with a couple games already in the books. Department Director Brad Morrison said there are 76 kids, ages 3-12, out for the program this year, which is up 20 from last year.     A brief downpour helped cool things down at the 2017 Hot City Summer Slam 3-on-3 basketball tournament this weekend.     The 2017 high school track and field season wrapped up this past weekend, with the State Championships at Casper. The girls team was among those in a three-way tie for fifth place at 43 points, and Jules Ward, Chandra Maddock, Haley McDermott and Makayla George were named All-State in Outdoor Track by the Wyoming Coaches' Association.     An event that has traditionally marked the start of summer for Thermopolis, the 3-on-3 basketball tournament, is just around the corner. The Hot City Summer Slam will be held on Memorial Day Weekend this year, May 27-28 in the parking lot at Hot Springs County High School.     The 3A East Regionals track meet, hosted here Friday and Saturday, saw the 4x800 relay team of Chandra Maddock, McKenna Bomengen, Haley McDermott and Jules Ward shatter a 31 year school record.     There were a few more personal records than usual set by the high school track team at the Bobcat Invite on Friday, according to Coach Ernie Mecca.     The weather finally cooperated for the Bobcat golf team last Thursday as they traveled to Riverton. Coach Jacob Smith said the Riverton course is a tough one, but the boys delivered a fifth place finish with a total score of 376.     Due to adverse weather late last week, the high school track team’s meet in Meeteetse on Friday, as well as the middle school team’s meet in Lander on Saturday, were cancelled.     The 2017 Thermopolis Gymkhana Series kicks off on Sunday, May 7, with an enter time of 9 a.m., at the Hot Springs County Fairgrounds.
