At the Wyoming State High School Championships Friday and Saturday, Star Valley claimed the 3A title by outdistancing Powell by more than 90 points with their 266.5 points for their encore state title. The final event of the wrestling season was not the hoped for outcome for the Bobcats as they finished 14th of the 16 class 3A teams with 39 points. The Lady Bobcat basketball team played their final regular season game last Saturday, dropping a close game to the Lady Dogies of Newcastle, 40-32. Head coach Cory Sova said he thought the girls gave it their all against Newcastle, but they definitely were lacking in concentration and energy. The Thermopolis boys basketball team travelled to Newcastle last weekend to face the Dogies, coming away with a 57-42 loss. Coach Kevin Gerber said it was nice to see Noah Schwalbe come back and have a nice game, with 18 points and 12 boards, as well as doing well with taking care of the ball. Thermopolis Middle School's seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams had their final games last weekend, with eighth grade attending conference in Powell and seventh playing here. Friday evening, Thermopolis went up against Rawlins on the road. Coach Kevin Gerber said the Bobcats stayed right with the Outlaws through three quarters, with 11 to Rawlins' 16 in the first. Once a year nearly all the high school wrestling programs in Wyoming send their teams to Riverton for the state’s premier all-comers event – the Ron Thon. Last weekend, 13 Bobcats competed in the tournament along with wrestlers from 47 other teams. Two facts became abundantly clear. A big program does not require a big school as witnessed by 3A’s Star Valley winning the tourney by 30 points, and 2A’s Moorcroft placing 3rd.
