  • Gymkhana opens 2017 series

    The 2017 Gymkhana series got underway this Sunday at the fairgrounds. Kids competed in barrel racing, pole bending, flag race, goat tying and dummy roping. Each day of the series will also feature a fun event, and Sunday's was an egg and spoon race.   • Meets cancelled for track teams

    Due to adverse weather late last week, the high school track team’s meet in Meeteetse on Friday, as well as the middle school team’s meet in Lander on Saturday, were cancelled. The high school will host the Bobcat Invite this Friday, beginning at 1 p.m. It will be their final meet before the 3A East Regionals May 12 and 13.     Weather has not been a big help to the Bobcat golf team this spring as they were rained out again last Friday for the second week in a row.     The 2017 Thermopolis Gymkhana Series kicks off on Sunday, May 7, with an enter time of 9 a.m., at the Hot Springs County Fairgrounds. Events will include barrels, poles, goat tying, flag racing and dummy roping, as well as a fun event which will be different each day. Additional series dates and enter times this year will be June 4 at 9 a.m., June 30 at 5 p.m., Aug. 11 at 5 p.m. and Sept. 16 at 9 a.m. Rides will be one hour after the enter times.     Coming off multiple personal records at the Worland triangular, the Bobcats kept up the momentum into the weekend, at the Roy Peck Invite at Riverton and set another 20.     The Thermopolis Middle school track team saw two meets this past week, at the triangular in Worland on April 20, and a meet in Cody April 22. Coach Stephanie Czarobski reported at the triangular Wyatt McDermott broke the seventh grade boys mile record by four tenths of a second, coming in at 5:32.4 compared to the previous record of 5:32.8.     Travis McDermott and Kevin Simpson came out on top in the Two-Person Best Ball Tournament on Sunday at the Thermopolis Golf Course.     Last Thursday at Worland, the Thermopolis track team competed in the D & D Invite. Coach Ernie Mecca said the girls 4x800 relay team of Chandra Maddock, McKenna Bomengen, Haley McDermott and Jules Ward was the third such team to automatically qualify for state, with a first place time of 10:21.52. The varsity boy's team took the first three spots with Hudson Roling taking first with a score of 65. The Cats tied for second place with 83 strokes going to Caleb DeCroo and Jake Maksin.     Last Friday and Saturday, sixth grade student Roedy Farrell and eighth grade student Logan Cole competed at the Heartland National Duals in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Farrell said his interest in wrestling stemmed from his dad, Will, who is a volunteer coach for the middle school wrestling program. Farrell noted his dad wrestled, which sparked his own interest in the sport and saw him hitting the mat at six years old.     Beginning at 10 a.m. this Saturday at Canyon Sporting Goods, there will be a clinic regarding catching walleye. Guest speaker Roger Shaffer said he would provide general information such as rods, techniques, spawning habits and types of baits, including times to use them and how to use them. Shaffer said he’s competed in professional fishing tournaments for more than 20 years.     Spring golf got underway this past weekend at the Bobcats traveled to Sheridan to participate in a match-play tournament. Coach Jacob Smith said it was a nice change of pace from the constant stroke play tournaments.     Spring golf is underway for Hot Springs County High School with their first tournament being held in Buffalo this Friday. Head coach Jacob Smith said there are currently eight golfers out for the team, but is expecting more once the Spanish Club returns from Peru next week.
