    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Jan 25, 2018

It was a mixed bag for the Lady Bobcat basketball team last week as they topped the Lady Warriors from Worland on Thursday in a nail biter, 53-48, then lost to the Buffalo Lady Buffs on Friday 75-37. Head coach Cory Sova said the Worland game was a great confidence booster for the girls. "This was a total team effort as we played almost the whole overtime period without three starters," Sova said. Mark Dykes, Editor|Jan 25, 2018

The Thermopolis Boys Basketball team showed plenty of energy taking to the court this past week against Worland and Buffalo, but came up short with a 57-46 loss to the Warriors and a 77-39 loss against the Bison. Coach Kevin Gerber said of the Worland game, "It was a very winnable game for us, one that I think the boys had in their mind that we could compete and win." Though they played flat in the first quarter, the Bobcats kept up with the Warriors, scoring 13 to Worland's 16. Gerber said one...

  • Wrestlers host quad Thursday

    Rex Clothier|Jan 25, 2018

Rarely does one see the kind of domination seen at the Lander Invitational Class 3A tournament. Adding the second place Worland and third place Lander points together would total exactly 8 points more than leader Star Valley's total of 257.5 with 14 wrestlers placing in the top six. Some observers opined that this may be the best team in the state regardless of class. The upcoming Ron Thon will clarify that. Seven Bobcats scored a total 62 points, in 15th place ahead of Rawlins and behind...

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Jan 25, 2018

The Thermopolis Lady Cat JV basketball team met Worland and Buffalo this past weekend while the “froshmore” (freshman-sophomore mixed) team took on Buffalo. The JV game against Worland was a tough loss (36-22) at home. Coach Katie Despain said it was a learning game for the girls as they only scored five total points in the first half, but rebounded to score 17 in the third. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to overcome the Lady Warriors as the Lady Cats were scoreless in the fourth quart...

  • Turnovers an issue for JV

    Mark Dykes, Editor|Jan 25, 2018

Last week, the Thermopolis boys JV basketball team had a rough time with a 58-40 loss to Worland and a 54-29 lost to Buffalo. Coach Ryan Shaffer noted the boys again “gave up a quarter” in the second, as Worland outscored us 21-10. “When you lose by 18,” he said, giving up 11 in one quarter is pretty tough.” Other factors include missed free throws to keep a win within reach. Down by 15 at the half, Shaffer said the team couldn’t really recover. The boys played much better in the second half, he...

  • Wrestlers show strong individual performances

    Rex Clothier|Jan 18, 2018

At midweek before his Bobcat wrestlers journeyed to Pavillion for the Don Runner Memorial, Coach C.J. Scholl took time to caution his team in a no uncertain manner that if they thought they were going to have an easy time of it because it was primarily a 2A tournament, they'd better think again. By the time they thought again, they found themselves in the middle of the pack, finishing seventh of the 18 entries. Roosevelt, Utah, Cokeville, and Big Piney finished as the top three, with the only...

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Jan 18, 2018

The Lady Bobcat basketball team added a pair in the "W" column this weekend, winning first at home on Friday against Lander, 36-30 and then winning in Big Piney on Saturday, 47-33. After losing to Lander's Lady Tigers by 10 before Christmas break, this win was a great one for the girls. The home opener had a great crowd and the girls were a little nervous, but they found a way to stay in the game and dominated in the fourth quarter. Both teams struggled in the shooting department, but coach...

Unfortunately, the Bobcats weren't able to score any more and lost 42-50. Coach Kevin Gerber said it was a great game for Hudson Roling, who had 10 points, and a breakout game for Noah Schwalbe, who had 16. Schwalbe also...

  • Girls lose to Lander, Big Piney

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Jan 18, 2018

It was something of a hard weekend for the freshman/sophomore girls basketball team as they dropped a game to Lander on Friday, 31-25. The team was just two points behind at the half, but they were out-shot in the third quarter, which really hurt. Coach Katie Despain said the girls struggled to find their rhythm as a team. "Daily we have and will continue to work in practice to improve their skills," she said. "They all have a lot of potential." Elisa Weber led the team with nine points against...

  • JV boys see tough weekend

    Mark Dykes, Editor|Jan 18, 2018

The recent four-game winning streak that the boys' high school JV team had was ended this weekend during their games against Lander and Big Piney. The boys took on Lander at home Friday night, losing 70-44. Coach Ryan Shaffer said it was one bad quarter, the second, that really killed them. Outside of that quarter, he noted, the boys played well. Showing their improvement as a team since they faced Lander earlier this year, the Bobcats kept them to making only four three-pointers rather than...

Although a close game, it really came down to missed free throws at the end by the Lady Cats. They shot 43...

  • He knows it takes hard work

    Dec 28, 2017

Bobcat Cullen Becher's sports career started at about age 5 or 6 in wrestling and PeeWee football with his father's support and coaching. He's always been talented physically according to his mother Kim, and she noted that while she was not a college grad, the value of education was always an important element of home life for all the kids, and all are now closely looking into the future to see where that education could take them. Cullen's favorite sport isn't wrestling, but football. Though...

He added that was okay as this was considered Fort Washakie's JV team. "It was good for our guys," Shaffer said. "We needed a win for sure." The coach is always pushing...

  • Lady Cats struggle to find rhythm

    Cindy Glasson, Reporter Photographer|Dec 21, 2017

    Rex Clothier|Dec 14, 2017

Bobcat wrestlers journeyed to Powell for their first competition of the season with a lot of questions to be answered. This young team answered them in the most positive way possible. Two years ago, junior Austin Ireland competed at...

  • Short schedule for freshmen boys

    Mark Dykes, Editor|Dec 14, 2017

This year, the freshman basketball team will only compete in five games. Coach Ryan Shaffer noted there are only three freshmen out this year — Jesse Skelton, Eli Dickey and James Lindquist — so any time there is a freshman/JV/Varsity game scheduled they can’t play the freshman game because they would be short quarters for everyone else. For the first freshman game on Thursday, Dec. 14 at Lovell, Shaffer said the plan is to take the freshmen and the sophomores which will give them 10 playe...
