Boys JV basketball Coach Ryan Shaffer said after a couple low-scoring games against Buffalo and Rawlins, last week’s games against Wheatland and Torrington were a nice change. The second half, our boys were able to keep up with scoring for the most part, but still ended up with a 16 point-loss. The T...

Friday night's game against Rawlins was much different than the Thermopolis Boys Basketball team was expecting, Coach Kevin Gerber said of the Bobcats' 60-19 loss against the Outlaws. Of their 60 points, 44 were made inside the paint. "We did want to challenge them from the outside," Gerber said. "With Jerome being gone I...

Rawlins tossed in six shots in a row from a variety of distances while Thermop struggled with turning the ball over throughout the game, ending with 25 total. "Rawlins has some very athletic girls with nice quickness," Sova s...
A busy week saw the Bobcat wrestlers entertain the Buffalo Bison at home Thursday in a dual that wasn't that entertaining for the Bobcats. Bright spots were provided for the home fans by the return to action of Cullen Becher and the continued improvement of Chase White. Becher used an impressive double leg takedown in a first period pin of his opponent while White overpowered his Bison foe also in the first period with a 1:34 pin. The 45-30 loss was made respectable more by the forfeits given...
The Lady Bobcat freshman and JV teams seemed to be stuck on the number 17 last weekend as that was the final score for both teams against Rawlins’ Lady Outlaws. Due to low numbers for the Lady Outlaws, the JV team was only able to play two quarters, losing 23-17 in Rawlins. “We came out not nearly aggressive enough in the first quarter,” said coach Katie Despain. Rawlins, on the other hand, came out ready to play and scored 15 points in the first quarter compared to the Lady Cats five. The s...

Head coach Cory Sova said the Worland game was a great confidence booster for the girls. "This was a total team effort as we played almost the whole overtime period without three starters," Sova said. Ashley McPhie fouled outwith about three minutes left in regulation play, Sesi Jensen with a minute...
The Thermopolis Boys Basketball team showed plenty of energy taking to the court this past week against Worland and Buffalo, but came up short with a 57-46 loss to the Warriors and a 77-39 loss against the Bison. Coach Kevin Gerber said of the Worland game, "It was a very winnable game for us, one that I think the boys had in their mind that we could compete and win." Though they played flat in the first quarter, the Bobcats kept up with the Warriors, scoring 13 to Worland's 16. Gerber said one...
Rarely does one see the kind of domination seen at the Lander Invitational Class 3A tournament. Adding the second place Worland and third place Lander points together would total exactly 8 points more than leader Star Valley's total of 257.5 with 14 wrestlers placing in the top six. Some observers opined that this may be the best team in the state regardless of class. The upcoming Ron Thon will clarify that. Seven Bobcats scored a total 62 points, in 15th place ahead of Rawlins and behind...
The Thermopolis Lady Cat JV basketball team met Worland and Buffalo this past weekend while the “froshmore” (freshman-sophomore mixed) team took on Buffalo. The JV game against Worland was a tough loss (36-22) at home. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to overcome the Lady Warriors as the Lady Cats were scoreless in the fourth quart...
Last week, the Thermopolis boys JV basketball team had a rough time with a 58-40 loss to Worland and a 54-29 lost to Buffalo. Coach Ryan Shaffer noted the boys again “gave up a quarter” in the second, as Worland outscored us 21-10. “When you lose by 18,” he said, giving up 11 in one quarter is pretty tough.” Other factors include missed free throws to keep a win within reach. Down by 15 at the half, Shaffer said the team couldn’t really recover. The boys played much better in the second half, he...
At midweek before his Bobcat wrestlers journeyed to Pavillion for the Don Runner Memorial, Coach C.J. Scholl took time to caution his team in a no uncertain manner that if they thought they were going to have an easy time of it because it was primarily a 2A tournament, they'd better think again. By the time they thought again, they found themselves in the middle of the pack, finishing seventh of the 18 entries. Roosevelt, Utah, Cokeville, and Big Piney finished as the top three, with the only...
The Lady Bobcat basketball team added a pair in the "W" column this weekend, winning first at home on Friday against Lander, 36-30 and then winning in Big Piney on Saturday, 47-33. After losing to Lander's Lady Tigers by 10 before Christmas break, this win was a great one for the girls. The home opener had a great crowd and the girls were a little nervous, but they found a way to stay in the game and dominated in the fourth quarter. Both teams struggled in the shooting department, but coach...

It was something of a hard weekend for the freshman/sophomore girls basketball team as they dropped a game to Lander on Friday, 31-25. The team was just two points behind at the half, but they were out-shot in the third quarter, which really hurt. Coach Katie Despain said the girls struggled to find their rhythm as a team. "Daily we have and will continue to work in practice to improve their skills," she said. "They all have a lot of potential." Elisa Weber led the team with nine points against...
The recent four-game winning streak that the boys' high school JV team had was ended this weekend during their games against Lander and Big Piney. The boys took on Lander at home Friday night, losing 70-44. Coach Ryan Shaffer said it was one bad quarter, the second, that really killed them. Outside of that quarter, he noted, the boys played well. Showing their improvement as a team since they faced Lander earlier this year, the Bobcats kept them to making only four three-pointers rather than...
