The IR printed an ad(?) in a box with Abraham Lincoln’s picture listing “The 10 cannots…”. This is false. Abraham Lincoln never said these words. But just over 50 years after Lincoln died, in 1916, The Rev. William John Henry Boetcker, a Presbyterian minister and notable public speaker, did. He made a booklet of ‘nuggets’ that came from his lectures, of which these axioms of misquotations are derived. Author Ralph Keyes has said that “Famous quotes need famous mouths”, hence how over the years these words were mistakenly attributed to L...
National Stuttering Awareness Week begins May 7. Did you know more than three million Americans stutter? That’s more than the populations of Wyoming, Vermont, Alaska, North Dakota, and Washington, DC…combined. One percent of your readers stutter, and up to five percent of children stutter for a time during their early developmental years. In the spirit of spreading awareness, the most important thing you and your readers can do for someone who stutters — or for anyone you are speaking with — is listen. Listen to what they have to say rather...
I would like to send a big thank you to members of the Thermopolis Police Department and the Hot Springs County Sheriff’s Office for their help and compassion over the last few weeks with regard to my property that was stolen. I really appreciate your help and dedication to the citizens of this community....
I have been going to write this for some time now. Today is the day. On Monday evening of the 30th it was raining pretty hard, that is for Wyoming. I would guess no more than 50 percent of cars and pickups had their headlights on. I don’t mean parking or clearance lights. Also, a Wyoming State Patrol car and local police car was in that group. In some areas of Wyoming there are highway signs that say to drive with lights on for safety reasons. Why not everywhere? I have driven all over the U.S.A. in my 60-plus years of driving and don’t und...
My husband and I attended the Zaniac comedy show at the HSC high school auditorium and we were delighted to see so much audience participation. Adults as well as children were filled with enthusiasm and excitement. The Hot Springs Greater Learning Foundation has done a phenomenal job of providing Thermopolis residents with great cultural and learning opportunities which we have very much enjoyed. We look forward to the upcoming auditorium events scheduled in May and September. The only thing that was somewhat disturbing was some of the jokes,...
We want our county to know our county treasurer was very helpful in helping the Webelos in our Cub Scout troop learn about our government office. It helped us get one of our badges too. She took time to help us and we liked that....
Funny story. Last week I took my car to the shop, and walked home. When I got to my front door I realized my house key was with my car keys, at the shop. I was locked out. I decided to go around to the back of the house to see if I could get in. On my way past the front window I stopped and tapped on the window and peered in, just to tease my dogs sitting on the sofa just on the other side of the glass. When I got to the back gate I discovered it was swollen by the recent moisture and was stuck. I had to beat on it and kick it to get it freed....
Each year, Medicare loses billions of taxpayer dollars to improper claims. This puts the Medicare trust fund at risk for everyone and affects the future of the Medicare program. Medicare fraud, errors, and abuse also affect current Medicare beneficiaries by increasing Medicare premiums, wasting money that could be used to improve health care services and causing serious personal consequences for beneficiaries, such as medical identity theft, negative health impacts, and personal financial losses. Senior Medicare Patrols (SMPs) empower and...
The big Feb. 14 Florida mass school shooting (and the previous several) show that too many good people are helpless against determined deviants and killers. They are unarmed, untrained for any defense, and essentially naked and afraid. Helpless. In another small state — Israel — these type of things don’t go on and on for dozens of victims, especially when perpetrated by one guy. Israelis live in an atmosphere of constant possibility of serious attacks, not just by crazies or mentals, but well-planned terrorists. Buses, schools, malls, churc...
One night this week we were out having dinner and when our evening was over we did not receive a bill. Our dinners had been paid for by some wonderful soul who had already picked up our tab and left before we even got our meal. Since we have no idea who this generous person was, our only way of saying “thank you” is to send this letter to the editor. It means so much in our society of negative news to know there are still many caring individuals around to spread blessings. Wish they were the ones that are always getting the attention of the...
I’m getting off the train! I have to admit I was real excited about our new President. Seemed he was doing everything right, or at least as much as one man can. He was sure trying hard to turn this country around for the common man. Darn, it seems that on the same day that Hope left the White House I had to get off the train. You see our President seems to have deserted the U.S. Constitution. I heard with my own ears him say we need to get the guns first and worry about due process later. Of course, he was only talking about, you know, (the c...
I’m humbled by the fine coverage of my selection to the Wyoming Press Association Foundation Hall of Fame given recently in the Independent Record by Publisher Lara Love. To twist an old adage, it takes a community to have a great newspaper. The people of Hot Springs County welcomed me as editor and publisher of the IR in 1984 and worked with me (and a bunch of fine IR team members) to make certain the IR was a newspaper doing its job. I’m especially proud of all that those IR team members have since achieved in Hot Springs County, Wyoming and...
Our Democratic Republic is being attacked by a political cancer. Almost every person in the Federal Government swore to uphold the United States Constitution. The Bill of Rights, the rule of law, and the separation of powers are being threatened right now. All U.S. citizens should consider this problem and hopefully respond appropriately....
Old, old laws Thermopolis Planning Board keeps on the books need to change. One law is — the city claims one hundred feet of “right of way” from curb to curb of city streets. Some streets are only 40 feet, or less, wide. This means the “right of way” laps 30 feet, more or less, onto property you pay taxes on. You are also responsible to keep the weeds on the city property removed. Years ago when city streets were mapped out, many lots were 30 ft. by 140 ft. You cannot build much on 30 feet. So people bought two lots to have a 60 by 140 foot...
I would like to say, in defense of the U.S. Constitution, the Good Book says the lion will eat grass like the lamb, but it will not happen in this life as we know it. When the lion takes the notion he will eat the lamb. So any quality of life in the future of the lambs was to form a government that is strong enough to hold back the actions of the lions of the world. That is what was done when the founding fathers drew up the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution which gave citizenship to all of us. I would much rather be a...
This Christmas gift-giving season is winding down (less than two weeks before Christmas). The economy is finally improving, and the spirit of the season is reaching new highs (Black Friday, Small Town Saturday, Cyber Monday). With this improvement in spirit goes many opportunities to help our fellow community members. Our community is known for its spirit of helping others in need. Cookie jar auctions, chili dinners, Soup and Bread dinners at a local church, a food bank run by another church, and other activities are all aimed at helping each...
What an honor and privilege to see the display of Nativity scenes as the Community Church welcomed the viewing public to this marvelous collections. What a sight to behold! Thanks to each owner for their generosity in sharing their treasured crèches with all who came to see. ‘Twas a lovely and refreshing scene and a blessing to all who attended; and to be reminded in a very picturesque manner of the birth of Jesus Christ....
The governor of the great state of Wyoming, Matthew H. Mead, has proclaimed that Thursday, Dec. 7, 2017 be designated as Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. It is earnestly recommended by the few remaining veterans in Wyoming, of the attack on Sunday, Dec. 7, 1941 that we all honor the many heroes that fell that day at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and the many that were wounded. It is also requested by the same surviving veterans that all school teachers in the area bring to the children’s attention what happened at Pearl Harbor and that it was the first d...
On November 10 my wife and I attended the Thermopolis Middle School Veteran’s Day Assembly. It was a very rewarding, well-prepared program. I was very impressed with what the school is teaching our youth and wish to thank the Middle School Student Council and their Sponsor for putting together such a special presentation. Thank you very much for honoring veterans with this annual event!...
I would like to thank the Hot Springs County Museum for hosting the Friends of the Library Poetry and Song Writing Contest. We have a real treasure in our county museum, plus the friendly staff — knowledgeable and helpful. If you haven’t taken the time to explore all the interesting displays of Wyoming history, you owe it to yourself to visit our museum....
Everyone talks about the wonderful people we have in Thermopolis. One of our wonderful people stole the cord I plug my car in at night on Wednesday afternoon. I didn’t realize what he had until a short time later. I was going downtown and went to unplug my car and the cord was gone. I’m a senior citizen living on a small amount of Social Security. I hope you are proud of yourself....
I would like to take a moment to thank the Middle School student council for the wonderful program for Veterans Day. I really appreciate the effort everyone made to put it on and thank you to the school district for letting it happen. There were a lot of people there, but I would like to see even more civilians come and participate. We need to give these kids a lot of credit. They are a lot smarter than we think they are. They deserve thanks for putting so much effort into this. Thank you also to the ladies for the beautiful quilts. I love...
I enjoy reading letters selected by the editor for printing in the Independent Record. Not all letters submitted are printed. Some letters contain factual errors which should be corrected. As the letter writer mentioned in Mr. Clothier’s most recent letter (the one who actually read his first letter), I must state that nowhere in my response to his first letter did I mention, as he put it, “every thing from athletes foot to dandruff and everything in between was the fault of liberal foolishness.” I guess Mr. Clothier was attempting to be humor...
A couple of weeks ago, I penned a salute to the liberals who had promoted some of the minor things we have in our country such as free public education, the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, women’s suffrage, Social Security, Medicare, etc. which occasioned a response that in point of fact, every thing from athletes foot to dandruff and everything in between was the fault of liberal foolishness. I felt rewarded that at least someone had actually read something I had written because truth be told, writers, no matter their degree of talent, c...
The Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital administration, Medical Staff and Board of Directors are dedicated to caring for all residents of Hot Springs County and the surrounding area regardless of their diagnosis. There has been a misunderstanding surrounding our position of caring for Title 25 patients, which are patients who have been placed on a mandatory hold due to the fear they may pose a danger to themselves or others. We have always and will always continue to admit any patient to our Emergency Department for a medical screening exam. T...
