  • Thank you veterans

    Nov 9, 2017

This Saturday marks the 99th anniversary of the end of World War I, when the armistice with Germany went into effect. Known initially as Armistice Day and meant to celebrate those who died in World War I, it did not become known as Veterans Day until 1954, nine years after World War II. It was following the second World War that the day, still then referred to as Armistice Day, was changed to acknowledge all veterans, a tradition carried on through the decades. This week, take time to acknowledge those veterans in your lives. There are plenty...

  • Deadlines for a reason

    Nov 2, 2017

Folks are often disappointed when they come into our office after deadline with a classified ad and are told we cannot fit it in this week, but we’ll be happy to run it next week. We have firm deadlines for articles and advertising, but maybe we haven’t really explained why or the process we go through to get the paper in your hands on time every week. For example, the classifieds. Deadline for classifieds is noon on Tuesday. We put together the classified page on Tuesday afternoon, meaning we have all the ads and someone types them into a com...

  • Fake news

    Oct 26, 2017

Fake news, as a concept, has been around at least as long as we’ve had politicians. But we used to call it something else: propaganda. That our President was able to harness the term and continue to ride its wave, is disconcerting to people in the business of reporting news because it is so often an attack on media outlets which pride themselves on unbiased reporting. But the President’s attacks are not groundless which is why they resonate with so many Americans. Journalism schools have evolved over the past generation, in an attempt to equ...

  • Get involved and educated

    Oct 19, 2017

At the Thermopolis Independent Record, as with any newspaper, we’re tasked with bringing you information about your community, not just on a local level but when residents are also involved with statewide happenings or national incidents. For instance, in this week’s edition, you’ll read about the terrifying experience residents had during the infamous Las Vegas shootings. Stories like these help to reflect how these national tragedies connect to our corner of the world. However, it doesn’t take horrific events to connect us on the local level....

  • Fireworks for touchdowns

    Oct 12, 2017

Once a Bobcat, always a Bobcat. Whether you were born and raised in Hot Springs County or you have children participating in sports in the district, chances are you “bleed purple and gold” for the Thermopolis Bobcats. That’s why it is so disappointing that a simple act of support for our football team has resulted in someone being such a wet blanket they made enough phone calls to get the practice stopped. Fireworks for touchdowns. Our fire department is on the sidelines of each game, sounding off their sirens and flashing their lights every...

  • We're here for you

    Oct 5, 2017

Since the end of summer, it seems, there’s been a bombardment of “holiday fever” with decorations out for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Veterans Day and, yes, even Christmas. But what you might not realize is we’re currently in the middle of a holiday week, as National Newspaper Week lands this year on Oct. 1-7. The week officially began in 1940, built off an effort for a Newspaper Appreciation Week from six years previous. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Real Newspapers . . . Real News” and could not be more fitting for the times we live...

  • Loyal and true

    Sep 28, 2017

There is a lot to be said for living in a small town in Wyoming. For instance, we don’t have to worry about football players taking a knee during the National Anthem as not only are their mothers watching, but every man, woman and child in the county is at the field, too, especially during Homecoming. We are fortunate to have young people in our schools who not only have a love for country, but are dyed-in-the-wool Bobcats. Generations of parents and grandparents still consider themselves Bobcats, no matter where they may have gone to c...

  • Time for seasons to open

    Sep 21, 2017

As the seasons change once again, another season comes into play as well — hunting. No doubt those looking to bag a deer, antelope or other game have their spots picked out and have already circled dates and times for when they’re going out. For the younger hunters, and those adults who have never been on a hunt, this experience is heightened by the prospect of bagging that first animal and the pride that comes from not only a successful hunt but being able to use the meat in recipes, the hide or fur in clothing or just to have a mount to dec...

  • One of America's best kept secrets

    Sep 14, 2017

Those of us who live in Hot Springs County appreciate our unique treasures and pride ourselves on being friendly to those who visit our community to enjoy those attractions. Receiving feedback from a visitor about their experiences while visiting Thermopolis is necessary to measure how we are doing. Last weekend a man from Tennessee travelled to Thermopolis to attend the WYO Quarter Horse Ranch Sale. While here, he stayed at a hotel, ate at restaurants, had drinks at a bar, enjoyed a dinosaur dig and more. To see this community through the...

  • Come out and show support

    Sep 7, 2017

This past weekend, all of our fall sports got into full swing as the Hot Springs County High School Football program had its opener against Shoshoni. It was great to come out of the starting gate with a win, as the Bobcats took down the Rangers 48-0. Our middle school players also kept Shoshoni out of the endzone in their 42-point victory. It was also a night for some amazing accomplishments by individual players as well. But, awesome as the victory is, there’s still a long way to go before those late October and early November, and, h...

  • Change is inevitable

    Aug 31, 2017

If not for change and man’s innate desire to keep moving, everyone west of the Mississippi would still be crammed, elbow to elbow in New York, Ellis Island would never have been built and the Statue of Liberty wouldn’t be gracing the harbor. Of course, with change comes some measure of inconvenience. Ironically, “convenience” plays into the most recent change to the Thermopolis landscape as we watch the demolition of Maverik, a “convenience” store. It’s sure to create some issues, missing one of our gas stations for several weeks, but be...

  • Community comes together

    Aug 24, 2017

The solar eclipse Monday was, in many ways, a first-time experience all over town. While the event itself was “once in a lifetime,” it also brought high sales numbers to local businesses and restaurants, created a multitude of RVs, campers and tents in our town and the campgrounds at Boysen and in the canyon, and brought an enormous amount of traffic. The number of vehicles coming in, out and through Thermopolis was incredible. Even more so, there were only a few minor accidents — though there was an unfortunate incident in which a dog was s...

  • Welcome to Thermopolis!

    Aug 17, 2017

We’re very happy that you’ve chosen our neck of the woods to experience this dramatic celestial event and we’re hoping to show you a great time while you’re here. As you go through these pages along with the Solar Eclipse special section, you’ll find we have a lot of things going on during the next few days. There’s a little something for everyone. Friday night will feature our ArtStroll downtown with all manner of arts and music. There will be everything from homemade soaps and lotions to a “make and take” solar art project. Saturday kicks...

  • A look at things to come

    Aug 10, 2017

This past week was certainly a busy one, with the Gift of the Waters Pageant, Big Horn Basin Folk Festival and Kiwanis Craft Fair providing plenty to do in Hot Springs State Park. The fairgrounds were busy as well, with the Lions Club Ranch Rodeo and, of course, the Hot Springs County Fair. Going to the fair is always an enjoyable experience, as there’s so much to get involved in, whether it be entering an exhibit, helping out with concessions or just having some fun during the family night or pig wrestling. Admiration goes out to those student...

  • Put your best foot forward

    Aug 3, 2017

Growing up we were always told to “put your best foot forward.” Today’s generation hears “dress for the job you want.” Both phrases should be on our minds as we prepare for the influx of visitors coming to Hot Springs County in about three weeks. If these visitors have a great time in Thermopolis while they’re here, chances are they will return and of course, will be telling their friends about this great little town in the middle of Wyoming. With that in mind, it would be a good time to start putting our best foot forward. Let’s get out there...

  • Come see the animals and the artistry

    Jul 27, 2017

Next week, the Hot Springs County Fairgrounds will be busy as the 2017 County Fair gets into full swing. Of course, youth involved with the fair will be plenty active as they prep their exhibits, weigh their animals and prepare to show them in the arena. Plenty others not showing animals will have exhibits in several ag-related fields as well as work such as photography, beadwork and ceramics. Even if you’re not an exhibitor, the week provides an opportunity to come on down to the fairgrounds and cheer on our local youth and admire the work p...

  • Still more summer to go

    Jul 13, 2017

It’s no secret that big chain stores and even some smaller businesses quickly get their products for the next season or holiday out just as soon as the current one passes, in some cases before it does. Seeing Christmas decorations next to Halloween candy or plastic eggs next to heart-shaped boxes of chocolates is pretty common these days. And that push to get products out has spread to summer vacation as well. No sooner do the colors and sounds of Independence Day fade and already shelves are stacked with the newest notebooks, folders, pens, b...

  • Cheers to the red, white and blue

    Jul 6, 2017

Wow. Once again, the Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department entertained the crowds with a spectacular fireworks show. Sometimes, they don’t get all the credit they deserve for putting on the annual Fourth of July festivities, but a big “Thank You” to the guys for gathering all the donations from local businesses and individuals, making all the arrangements for the show, ordering in the fireworks and creating a safe space for folks to set off their own whizzers, bangers and sky rockets. Instead of spending the holiday with their own famil...

  • Celebrating our independence

    Jun 29, 2017

Next week will see the annual observance of Independence Day, recognizing that day in 1776 when the United States adopted the Declaration of Independence and declared itself a free nation, no longer part of the British Empire. Though the legal separation of the 13 colonies from Great Britain actually occurred on July 2, it wasn’t until Congress debated and revised the language in Thomas Jefferson’s original document that the Declaration of Independence was finally approved. The following year saw the first observance of Independence Day, wit...

  • It's the dads' turn

    Jun 15, 2017

This weekend marks the annual celebration of and for the daddies, the papas, and the old men. That’s right, it’s Father’s Day, a day that calls to mind images of dad flipping burgers on the grill and opening homemade cards and boxes containing ties. Father’s Day is a relatively new celebration, not really seen outside Catholic traditions until the early 20th century, when it was established to complement Mother’s Day — first celebrated in 1908. Father’s Day was first established in 1910. While celebrating those with whom we have genetic ties...

  • Think before you type

    Jun 8, 2017

We all know the old saying about opinions and that everyone has one, and in this age of social media it’s very apparent everyone has an opinion. As American citizens, we are blessed with the freedom of speech, something many other countries are not allowed. Imagine living in North Korea where you cannot speak your mind, especially regarding anything political. While all of us may speak our minds, sometimes we forget when we’re typing away on the computer, that there is an actual human being on the other side of that screen. Granted, that per...

  • Be careful out there

    May 25, 2017

Green grass, green leaves and beautiful flowers are all definite and welcomed signs of spring in Wyoming, however, in order to get all those delights for the eyes, we need to have plenty of moisture. Unfortunately, there has been an abundance of rain this spring, which added to the copious amounts of snow we had over the winter, means a lot of flooding danger. We’ve watched and waited as Wind River Canyon has suffered from the rain and the start of the run-off with boulders, some the size of houses, sliding from their precipice. Emergency m...

  • Spruce up Thermopolis

    May 11, 2017

We’re nearing the middle of May with tourist season right around the corner. The Town of Thermopolis has proclaimed May 22-25 our Spring Clean-up, encouraging residents and businesses to do a little sprucing up to put on our best face for our incoming summer visitors. It is amazing how something as simple as sweeping a sidewalk can make a tourist walking through downtown think we are about the prettiest place they’ve ever seen. Perception is a big part of bringing visitors back to Thermopolis, again and again. We have always been a burgh fil...

  • Get out and enjoy a busy May

    Apr 27, 2017

The month of May is nearly upon us and with it comes a lot of activities that will keep both parents and students very busy. Actually, it can keep everyone busy, between all the fabulous school concerts on tap, prom, the district track meet, graduation and everything else, it may seem a bit overwhelming at times. Some of the planning going on goes all the way through summer. For example, don’t forget to attend the public meeting regarding the solar eclipse on Monday night at 6 p.m. in the middle school commons. A big night at the middle s...

  • Plenty to do this weekend

    Apr 13, 2017

As we come to the end of this Holy Week, you will be able to find a complete listing of services available at each of our local churches on the front page of this edition. Along with church services, throughout these pages you will find all kinds of things to do, from egg hunts to a 5K walk/run and the Second Friday ArtStroll, plenty of things for everyone in the family to do as they gather for the weekend. Whether your heart turns to a higher power or not, one thing is certain, life is renewing around us, from the new shoots of green grass to...
