The Annual Smokin’ Waters Golf Tournament is just around the corner, Saturday, June 9 at the Thermopolis Golf Course. The shotgun start will be at 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., featuring an 18 hole scramble with four person teams. We may only be near the end of May, but the Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department is already thinking about the 4th of July fireworks display and are unfortunately coming up short. According to fire chief Mark Collins, it takes about $12,000 to create a 20-30 minute display. This year, one of the department’s main funding sources cut their donation from $5,000 to just $1,000, a huge blow to the event. “The fire department has been doing this show since 1962,” Collins said, “and the community has always been generous.” The cost of the fireworks...
Registrations are now closed for the Hot City Summer Slam 3-on-3 basketball tournament May 26 and 27 in the Hot Springs County High School parking lot. Jump Rope For Heart events are conducted in school by physical education teachers. The money raised goes directly to the American Heart Association and every little bit helps. Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) Raegan Stanley, M.S., CCC-SLP from Thermopolis is collaborating in a research study for the University of Wyoming dealing with a treatment technique for Parkinson’s patients. May is Motorcycle Awareness Month, and the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) is committed to removing barriers for riders on the path to the freedom of the open road on a motorcycle. Starting this spring, motorcycle safety classes through WYDOT will now include an online component for a portion of the classroom learning. It was definitely a learning experience last week as the middle school held an Ag Expo. Students learned the difference between horns and antlers and compared the size of a black bear skull with a grizzly.
