People for People will once again be holding their annual free Thanksgiving Dinner at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church on Thursday, Nov. 22, from noon until 2 p.m. The free dinner is open to anyone of any denomination and will include turkey with all the fixings, mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, rolls and butter, a variety of salads and sides as well as pies, cakes and other desserts. Thermopolis Middle School will be holding their annual Veterans Day Celebration this Friday, starting at 9:30 a.m. The middle school student council puts together a program to celebrate the veterans each year, but with Veteran’s Day falling on a Sunday, the program was pushed back to this Friday so all could attend. For the second year, the Salvation Army will be bell ringing in Thermopolis through the Ministerial Association. Beginning on Dec. 1 and running through the four Saturdays up to Christmas, the volunteer bell ringers can be found at different locations around town from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. each day. All of the funds raised will be kept in Hot Springs County to help with things like utility bills for those in need. The local Boy Scouts troop, Troop No. 5053, has been inactive for a couple years, but in recent months there has been a revitalization happening with the service organization. Pastor Chuck Cooper, the institutional representative said the Community Federated Church has sponsored Scouting since the 1950’s as the charter organization. A new program is underway at Thermopolis Middle School and so far, has been extremely successful. Under the direction of Becky Martinez, middle school students are now able to join an FFA chapter and enjoy all the opportunities FFA offers. According to Martinez, several students showed a big interest in livestock judging last year, so she contacted Joey Johnson with the 4-H program and from January through April, the kids worked, Johnson kept scores and the top four students got to go to the State Livestock Judging competition. The Round Top Sams Club elected officers for 2019 at their Friday, Nov. 2 meeting. Most of those elected were carryovers from 2018, which raised the question of whether they were so good at what they did this year that members wanted them to stay on or whether no one else wanted to serve as an officer. The Hot Springs County Recreation District will host its Turkey Hoop Shoot on Thursday Nov. 15. Registration is at 6:30 p.m. at the Armory, with the event starting at 7 p.m. Second grade up to age 15 can participate, and parental participation is required.
