With the start of school just around the corner, it is time once again for the People for People Backpack program to get rolling. The program consists of a group of volunteers in the community dedicated to stopping hunger for local children by filling backpacks with food that are distributed on Friday’s so they have something to eat over the weekend. First Baptist Church Pastor Harvey Seidel provided rides for students in the church's Vacation Bible School, in a carriage drawn by horses Smoky and Topaz. The Fifth Annual Big Horn Basin Folk Festival takes place on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3 and 4, in Hot Springs State Park. There’s a new activity in town that’s perfect for the entire family – Disc Golf. A coordinated effort between the State Park, Hot City Outdoor Alliance and the school district has made the nine-hole course possible. Played like traditional golf, except instead of balls, flying discs are used to putt, drive and make that elusive hole-in-one. This year the Hot Springs County Fair will again be home to the Over the Hill Showmanship event, which has not been seen since 2015. The showmanship event is for anyone but the youth exhibitors, including parents and former 4-H or FFA members. Over the Hill will follow the regular livestock shows for large animals, with perpetual trophies awarded. The Gift of the Waters Pageant is nearly ready to begin its 69th year as a staple of the summer in Thermopolis.
