    Thermopolis Middle School volleyball teams had their ups and downs this past week according to head coach Aimee Kay. The teams are playing well and Kay said the girls are getting more comfortable with running the 5-1 line and switching from offense to defense, but there is still room for improvement.     Many parts of Wyoming are home to both black bears and grizzly bears. Bears may avoid encounters, however hunters can certainly come into contact with a bear that does not avoid you and instead exhibits predatory or aggressive behavior.     Hunting season is getting underway and Wyoming Game and Fish has released their predictions for the 2018 hunt. With more fawns being born in 2017, the harvest looks good for antelope this year. Overall, the numbers look good and hunters can expect buck quality to be comparable to last year with good to excellent hunting success. Deer had a better fawn survival rate in 2017 than they have in years past, mostly due to the mild winter and a wetter springs providing plenty of feed.     Attendance was a bit down for this year's Hot Springs County Friends of the NRA banquet last Saturday, though Friends member Cynthia Garbin noted those who attended were very enthusiastic. In particular, she said, the live auction saw plenty of competition, with a Diamondback 308 rifle the top dollar item at $1,300. The Gun of the Year, a Kimber Custom II 45 ACP, went for $875.     Fifth Judicial District Court Honorable Judge Robert E. Skar will retire on Oct. 2, and in recognition for his years on the bench there will be an open house for him at Worland, where his main office is. As a justice in the Fifth Judicial District, Skar covers Washakie and Hot Springs counties, as well as part of Big Horn County.     Social Studies teacher Steven Soderstrom comes to us from Colorado, although he is originally a Worland native. Soderstrom teaches tenth grade as well as eighth grade social studies.     During last week’s meeting of the Thermopolis-Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce, Chamber Executive Director Meri Ann Rush provided a recap of the 2018 demolition derby, noting that the event went well. A total $35,000 was budgeted for income from the event, though the actual amount received was $34,424.25. However, the budgeted expenses were $20,000, but came in at only $19,391.10.
