This home on Black Mountain Road barely missed being taken by the Red Hole Fire last Thursday, with burned grass nearly to their front door. The fire ultimately consumed 2,105 acres and was brought under control by concerted efforts between the Thermopolis Volunteer Fire Department, BLM, units from the Shoshone and Big Horn National Forest Service, Wind River Agency, Worland and one private entity with a fire truck. According to Dusty Lasseter, Bear Wise community coordinator with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, grizzly bears have been caught in western Hot Springs County for livestock depredation. Lasseter did not have any exact dates to share, but noted two bears were trapped and relocated. Monday, Sept. 10, in Hot Springs District Court, Jody White was sentenced to six months unsupervised probation on a misdemeanor charge of interfering with a peace officer. White pleaded guilty to the charge, originally listed as a felony, and her sentencing immediately followed. The highest volunteer honor AARP Wyoming presents is named after the organization’s founder, Ethel Percy Andrus. The local FFA chapter’s Days of Community Service will kick off with a cleanup day on Friday, Sept. 21 at the Hot Springs County Fairgrounds. Former Thermopolis resident, Ruth C. Mathews, 91, passed away Tuesday, September 11, 2018, in Riverton, Wyo., after a period of declining health. Born August 6, 1927, in Berthoud, Colo., she was one of 15 children of Christian "Chris" and Catherine (Braun) Hill. On March 9, 1947, she married Melvin Hamilton "Mel" Mathews in Torrington, Wyo. Alfred Leroy Bonar passed away August 31, 2018, in Rapid City, S.D., from complications from a stroke. Alfred was born May 7, 1959, in Riverton, Wyo. He was raised in Kemmerer, Wyo., and graduated from Sheridan, Wyo. Al approached everything he did with purpose, whether it was working, driving, or partying. Baja Bonar was his nickname. During Tuesday’s meeting of Hot Springs Travel and Tourism, Director Amanda Moeller reported a small decrease in the fiscal year 2018-19 lodging tax receipts compared to the FY 2017-18. According to the receipts, the current fiscal year total for September was $19,917.98, compared to the $20,092.93 the previous year, a decrease of $174.95 or one percent. The T-Town Crusaders are gearing up for what promises to be a fun night with a Hags and Bags Purse Auction, scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 13.
