The 12th annual Great American Turbo Turtle Trek is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 26 at 1 p.m., at the Big Spring outlet stream. The event is the main fundraiser for the local Rotary club. Among the service projects Rotary has done are: scholarships, the handicap accessible swings in Hot Springs State Park, helping with the Christmas baskets and donating to building an outhouse at the 4-H camp. The Hot Springs County Weed and Pest has funding available for Russian olive and saltcedar control projects. Interested landowners should contact HSCWP by Sept. 14 to be considered for cost share in this program. County Weed and Pest Supervisor Lindsey Woodward said projects include maintenance of removal sites from the past or new removal sites. The cost share would be based on how much interest there is. Last Friday afternoon, the area around Tumbleweed Propane Inc. and about a block in every direction was evacuated and traffic was detoured after propane began leaking from the bottom of a truck. The accident happened after the driver over-tightened a bolt and caused it to break. The popular Maverik store along Sixth Street will soon be a memory as the old store is taken out and a new, larger one takes its place.
