The Hot Springs County School Board’s discussion of school safety on July 19 opened with Superintendent Dustin Hunt pointing out that the school district had planned to conduct a complete safety audit just as the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Larry Carter passed away July 21 at his home in Powell after a long battle with COPD. His loving wife Lanette and dear friend Maria Martinez were at his side. Larry was born in Snyder, Texas, on October 23, 1955, to Dean and Marie (Fort) Carter. He lived there until he moved with his family to Gillette, Wyo., in 1968 then to Thermopolis in 1969. At the July Hot Springs County Travel and Tourism meeting, Chairman Carl Leyba and the board welcomed newly appointed members Dr. William Robinson and Ryan Shaffer. Robinson is the owner of Owl Creek Graphics, a retail store in downtown Thermopolis. Shaffer owns P6 Station, a pizza restaurant. Both of their businesses are related to the tourism industry and therefore they qualify to be board members. Robinson and Shaffer were not able to attend the meeting, however.
