    The Hot Springs County Sheriff's Department has a new K-9 unit with Deputy Shayna Cox and a one and half-year-old German Shepard named Riggs. Cox said that she and Riggs went through about three weeks of training working every day. Riggs was supplied by a company called MAKOR K9 of West Virginia. Cox explained, "The guy that sold the dog to us came down and trained with me, brought the dog, delivered it, and trained with me. We finished a little bit early, so it would have been 21 days."     The Bureau of Reclamation, in response to a request from the Hanover Irrigation District, has scheduled a flushing flow below Boysen Dam. “The purpose of the flushing flow below Boysen is to attempt to flush moss down river and mitigate the moss the district has at their diversion,” said Wyoming Area Manager Lyle D. Myler.     Thomas Daniel Porter, 76, died Monday, July 4, 2022, at his residence in Thermopolis after a valiant battle with cancer. Born October 23, 1945, in Los Angeles, Calif., he was the son of Walter B. and Mary Surian Porter. After his high school graduation he was drafted into the Marine Corps where he served and was wounded in Vietnam. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Commendation Medal.     Last Thursday, a fire on BLM land in the Black Willow area, near East River Road, was contained to roughly 35 to 38 acres. The fire started in rough terrain after a lightning storm hit Hot Springs County the night before. Eight government engines stayed on scene for around three days.     The Thermopolis-Hot Springs Chamber of Commerce held its July board meeting last week. During old business, Chamber CEO Meri Ann Rush said the recent Culpepper & Merriweather Circus was “fun and a long day.” There were volunteers to take tickets and Rush got to see the tent rise.
