    Doug Nichols was recently named Wyoming 4-H Leader of the Year for the Northwest Area. According to a statement from 4-H Educator Joey Johnson, “Nichols has been a steadfast 4-H Leader and volunteer for the Hot Springs County 4-H Program since 2013. Doug has spent countless hours teaching archery to 4-H youth ages 8-18. Since Doug started helping, the archery program has grown exponentially and 4-H youth of all ages enjoy learning the 4-H Archery discipline.   • Students attend summer institute

    In June, Hot Springs County High School students Olivia Weyer and Akeyla Franklin attended the 33rd annual Summer High School Institute at the University of Wyoming. The two were among the 90 students selected for the program from across the state. After it was suggested they attend the program by their school counselor, the pair set to applying. They noted as part of the process they had to write essays on topics chosen from a provided list.   • Volleyball camp

    The Hot Springs County Recreation District is gearing up for the Jr. Bobcat Volleyball Camp, starting Monday, July 16. The week-long camp will be held at the high school, with high school players and coaches running the camp. Third through fifth graders will begin at 9 a.m., finishing at 11:30 a.m. Sixth through eighth graders start at 1 p.m. and end at 4 p.m. Registration for the camp is being held at the armory or the day of the event.   • Champs Chicken open for business

    At the Southside Travel Center, the restaurant space once again is seeing life, with the opening of a Champs Chicken location. Marian Lanik explained when the owners of the previous restaurant put in notice they were going to move, she met with the building owners to determine what could go in the space. After doing some research, she decided Champs would be a good franchise. In addition to chicken, the restaurant also has fish and shrimp available, and Lanik hopes to have pork tenderloin this week.     The Hot Springs County Fair is just a couple weeks away, but deadlines for entries begin this week. Youth Horse Show entries are due at the Extension Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, July 13. Friday, July 20, at 5 p.m. marks the deadline for entries for 4-H and FFA Beef, Swine, Sheep, Goats, Poultry, Cats, Dogs and Rabbits.     The final parade of the summer is just around the corner, and with a theme of Red, White and Blue, everyone should be able to think of something fun to enter.     Last week, a few calls came in to the Hot Springs County Law Enforcement Center regarding sick wildlife. Though the animals could not immediately be located and confirmed they had Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), Game Warden Benge Brown said the county is one of the more prevalent areas for the sickness.
