This past weekend brought the action of the annual PRCA Cowboy Rendezvous Rodeo to town. The parade saw plenty of entries from businesses, rodeo royalty and individuals. Keeping with the theme of United We Stand, many featured patriotic colors and tributes to veterans and the Armed Forces. During their meeting Tuesday evening, the Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees approved amending the budget for the 2017-18 fiscal year. Chief Financial Officer Shelly Larson explained because they are a hospital district they are subject to different rules in terms of their budget. The Hot Springs County Commissioners discussed the ongoing issue of drainage at the Hot Springs County Airport during last week’s meeting, voting to go forward with granting the project to Owl Creek Excavation. The commissioners received funding, not to exceed $100,000 from the FAA to fund the project. In Hot Springs District Court earlier this month, Andrew Poss was sentenced on six charges from a January incident during which he struck a local business and a patrol unit. The VFW will be home to a cookie jar auction for John Gerrells on Friday, July 13. Gerrells recently underwent colon cancer surgery and also has to have a heart surgery. Gerrells actually began the cookie jar auctions back in 1993, Meredith VanAntwerp said, with the very first done to help the state championship football team to raise money for a trip to Australia. The annual Gift of the Waters pageant is presented the first weekend in August. The Women’s Chorus would welcome new singers. Ellen Mortimore, who began singing in the pageant in 1957 and continued for more than 30 years, is offering rehearsals for new singers beginning the first Sunday of July, the first, starting at 4 p.m. at Community Federated Church. The Hot Springs County Museum will host the “Nick Eggenhofer” gallery opening this Saturday at 2 p.m. The gallery will feature original pieces of western art from Eggenhofer, from dry brush “pulp magazine” illustrations to full color detailed depictions of western life. Walter William "Bill" Martin, 89, of Thayne, Wyo., passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 17, 2018. Bill was born in Laramie, Wyo., on February 18, 1929, to Leotha and Walter Martin. He attended grade school in Laramie and moved to Cody, graduating from Cody High School in 1948. He excelled in athletics – football, wrestling, and track. Mary Margaret Drake, 94, of Story City, Iowa, passed away June 25, 2018, at Bethany Manor in Story City. Mary was born June 12, 1924, to Paul and Eleanor Louise (McDonald) Weatherby in Sioux City, Iowa. She married Lawrence Drake on September 24, 1947. He died December 20, 1990. Robert Roxey Wiles, 79, passed away at his residence in Thermopolis, Wyo., June 20, 2018, following a period of declining health. Born February 18, 1939, in Ionia, Mich., he was one of six children of Elmer and Nina (Montgomery) Wiles. Following school he was employed with two junkyards hauling junk cars. A plaque recognizing 24 men from Hot Springs County who gave their lives in World War II is passed during a rededication of the memorial grove for the soldiers. The rededication was done by the Hot Springs County Daughters of the American Revolution and VFW Auxiliary, and during the program it was noted many of the original green ash trees in the grove are still standing. Another Big Horn Basin Football Camp is in the books, held last weekend at LeRoy Hayes Memorial Field, one of the founders of the camp 29 years ago. According to camp director Heath Hayes, numbers were up this year with 162 athletes participating. "It wasn't a record breaking year," Hayes said, "but we had about 20 more players than last year." Thermopolis will be home to the Bobcat Wrestling Camp June 29-30. This is a technique camp with NCAA runner up and three time All American Bryce Meredith teaching. Registration is open until the event, and sessions begin the morning of Friday, June 29. The first session for 12 and up is 10 a.m.-noon. Hot Springs County High School Speech and Debate member Tyler Kay and coach Cindy Glasson returned last Saturday from the National Tournament in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Thousands of students from across the U.S. and five nations attended the week-long tournament as the best of the best from their state. Haylee McDermott has been awarded the P.E.O. Star Scholarship. Her application was submitted to Thermopolis’s local Chapter K then forwarded to International Chapter. Her name was selected from 2,000 senior high school women. Only about 700 were selected. The P.E.O. Star Scholarship was established in 2009 to provide scholarships for exceptional high school senior women to attend an accredited postsecondary educational institution in the United States or Canada in the next academic year.
