    The deadline for getting your name on the ballot for various openings, locally and statewide, ended last week with a total of 27 Republicans and 13 Democrats vying for various offices.     A major part of tourism in Thermopolis has finally received the go-ahead to open their doors, although there are some restrictions still in place. Hellies TePee Pool and Star Plunge were allowed to do a ‘soft opening’ the last week in May with several precautions in place, including no use of jetted hot tubs or locker rooms and open to members only.     Jennifer Fisher and Forrest Coleman-Weisz approached the Town Council asking if they could have a street dance featuring well-known music artist Chancey Williams. Fisher proposed two dates, July 1 and 2. They want to close the street and have an open container policy while maintaining the regulations of social distancing.   • Addendum to airport hanger approved

    The Hot Springs County Commissioners approved an addendum to a hangar lease at the airport, which allows a small portion of land to be added to a lease in order to place a propane tank on the property. According to FBO Nate Messenger, there were 140 operations at the airport during the month of May, including two air ambulances. He indicated fuel sales are up quite a bit from April, as well. The youth must have their animals weighed and tagged, with a Wyoming State Fair ear tag, in order to show and sell their animals at county fair later this summer.   • Governor instructs state agencies to prepare for deeper budget reductions

    CHEYENNE – In response to Wyoming’s significant revenue shortfalls, Governor Mark Gordon has instructed state agencies to immediately take action to further reduce spending and prepare for deeper cuts in the coming months. The reduction plan requires agencies to prepare for more drastic scenarios and be proactive, since the revenue situation could further worsen.     The Chamber of Commerce is looking for high school students and adults to operate their fireworks store in preparation for the Independence Day holiday. Fireworks SuperMarket purchased the store last year and contacted the Chamber in February. They wanted to find an organization to run it.     The Wyoming High School Activities Association (WHSAA) recently released a list of those schools in the state which showed exemplary sportsmanship. With Hot Springs County High School participating in 3A East, they were one of only five schools who were recognized for their sportsmanship, having no coaches or athletes ejected from a game during the entire school year.     During the special session, State legislators authorized the Wyoming Community Development Authority (WCDA) to receive and administer funds provided to the State of Wyoming from the U.S. Department of Treasury pursuant to the CARES Act.     Dennis Wayne "Denny" Jones, 89, one of the last real cowboys, passed away June 1, 2020. Born October 6, 1931, in Thermopolis, he was the son of Durward and Dorothy (French) Jones. Following high school, he attended the University of Wyoming graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree. During the Korean War he served in the US Army.     Thomas “Tom” Carl Lorenzen, 76, passed away on May 30, 2020 in Sun City West, AZ due to complications of late-stage Parkinson’s. He was born in Coronado, CA on January 29, 1944 to Catherine H. and Carl G. Lorenzen. Tom’s dad was in the army awaiting deployment to the Pacific during WWII.
