Thermopolis Special Olympics Bobcats will be doing their annual Jackalope Jump at Hot Springs County High School Saturday, March 25, starting at noon. This is the only fundraiser for the local Special Olympics team and they use the funds that are raised to help out the athletes with registration fees, hotel costs, and meal costs throughout the years’ competitions. The Freedom Ball Adult Prom is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Saturday, March 25 at the Days Inn. The Big Horn Basin Riders motorcycle club is hosting the event, but attendees don’t have to be members or bikers to attend. The Wyoming Department of Workforce Services has released the Wyoming unemployment rate for January 2017, showing an unchanged rate of 4.8 percent. From December to January, almost all county unemployment rates followed their normal seasonal pattern and increased. In Hot Springs County, the unemployment rate was 5% for January, up a bit from the 4.3% in December, but lower than the 5.7 percent we saw in January of 2016. Marilyn Johnette Ekdahl Belmain Mills, 82, passed away on March 13, 2017, while wintering in Salome, Ariz. Marilyn was born in Rawlins, Wyo., on October 30, 1934, to George Edwin Ekdahl and Cora Mae "Corky" Foster Ekdahl. She was born a third generation resident of Carbon County. Larry Lester Long, 69, passed away Friday, March 17, 2017, at his residence in Hot Springs County after a short illness. Born September 19, 1947, in Glendive, Mont., he was one of three children of W.A. and Mary Lou (Stovall) Long. Wayne Robert Hockaday, 82, passed away suddenly Mon., March 13, 2017, at Washakie Medical Center in Worland. Born at home on October 12, 1934, in Alamosa, Colo., he was one of five children of Fred and Wilhamein (Armstrong) Hockaday. Wyoming Dinosaur Center Executive Director Angie Guyon found out the last week of February she was appointed to a three-year term with the Wyoming Tourism Board. The Bobcat Speech and Debate team finished their season strong last weekend at the National Qualifying meet at Casper College. Coach Cindy Glasson said the team’s finish fits perfectly with what usually happens – bad State Tournament, good National Qualifiers.
