Five members of the Thermopolis FFA Chapter have earned the qualifications needed to for their State FFA Degrees. Jessie Pennoyer, Dreama Thorpe, Taylor Nuttall, Logan Bartholomew and Ryan Bleak will receive their awards in April at the State FFA Convention in Cheyenne. Pennoyer was also selected as one of the top five Ag seniors of Wyoming. An Owl Creek Watershed Study public meeting is set for Monday, Feb. 13 from 4-6:30 p.m. in the Big Horn Federal meeting room. Lowham Walsh along with the Wyoming Water Development Commission and Hot Springs County Conservation District are hosting the meeting. The goal of the study is to understand water resource conditions within the watershed and to identify water supply projects that take best advantage of limited water resources. New unemployment numbers for December have been released by the research and planning section of the Wyoming Department of Workforce Services, showing an unemployment rate of 4.8 percent compared to the national rate of 4.5 percent. Wyoming has a total labor force of just over 303,000 people. In December 14,674 of those folks were out of work. In Hot Springs County our unemployment rate is 4.3 percent, just below the national average. Relay For Life is currently taking orders for their annual daffodil sales. Pre-order deadline is Feb. 17 After some reorganization, the Thermopolis chapter of Relay is now combined with those in Worland, Ten Sleep, Basin, Hyattville and Manderson. Once a year nearly all the high school wrestling programs in Wyoming send their teams to Riverton for the state’s premier all-comers event – the Ron Thon. Last weekend, 13 Bobcats competed in the tournament along with wrestlers from 47 other teams. Two facts became abundantly clear. A big program does not require a big school as witnessed by 3A’s Star Valley winning the tourney by 30 points, and 2A’s Moorcroft placing 3rd. The Lady Bobcat basketball team lost a pair of games over the weekend on their home court, losing to Wheatland's Lady Bulldogs on Friday, 60-40 and to the Lady Trailblazers of Torrington on Saturday, 45-36. Last weekend saw Thermopolis High School boys basketball action at home, taking on Wheatland Friday and Torrington Saturday. The Bobcats lost against both, falling 49-39 against Wheatland and 66-59 against Torrington. Coach Kevin Gerber said the boys played two really good games this weekend, and he was very proud of them. The Bocats JV and freshmen teams met with some tough competition this weekend against Wheatland and Torrington. The JV lost 50-29 to Wheatland and 48-45 to Torrington, while the freshmen lost 50-33 against Wheatland and 46-31 against Torrington. The boys wrestled against Lander and Riverton, and came away from the home competition with 13 wins and seven losses.
