School attendance and drop-out rates were a large part of the January school board meeting with principal Breez Daniels explaining the importance of freshman success to high school graduation. Absence rates are going down in the district quite rapidly when compared to the mid-way point in the year, August through December. Elizabeth Louise "Betty" Scoggin, 87, passed away Thursday, January 23, 2020, at Hot Springs County Memorial Hospital in Thermopolis following a period of failing health. Born October 2, 1932, in Rawlins, Wyo., she was the only girl of four children of John and Ellen (Hennek) Morgan. On September 17, 1955, Betty married James "Jim" Scoggin in Rawlins, Wyo. Wanda “Lou” Schaper Steinle, 83, of Thermopolis, Wyo., passed away Sat., Jan. 25, 2020, at Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, Wyo. She was born on June 24, 1936, in Riverton, Wyo., to Arthur and Opal Olga (Ibach) Schaper. Lou was raised in Buck Horn Flats and attended school in Riverton. Edson Buck Carothers, 65, passed away January 25, 2020, at his residence in Thermopolis. Born March 2, 1954, in Boulder, Colo., he was one of four children of Robert and Erva (Kingsbury) Carothers. The family soon moved to Shell, Wyo. Buck graduated from Greybull High School. In 1974 he married Arvilla Jean Hankinson. In the mid 70’s they moved to Thermopolis. Sherry Ann Taylor, 62, of Ione, Calif., formerly of Thermopolis, passed away surrounded by her family on January 15, 2020. Sherry was born in Texarkana, Ark., on April 11, 1957. The middle school boys basketball teams took on Lovell Saturday with the eighth grade boys having home court advantage and the seventh graders playing in Lovell.
