The varsity Bobcat boys basketball team traveled to Mountain View last week for 3A West Regional Tournament action. In their first game, the Bobcats went up against Lyman, losing 51-73 at the final buzzer. “I thought our team came out and played really well in the first half against Lyman. No one was really able to gain an edge in the first half as both teams were trading buckets,” said coach Shane Corpening. He added, “Offensively, we came out and really shot the ball well in the first half. Gavin, Cord, and Kanyon all knocked down some huge...
Last Friday, the varsity Lady Cats basketball team played their last home game against Lovell, with Lovell getting the win, 48-27. “It would be our senior night along with our pink out game. The last time we played Lovell we held our own against them. We even came out with an early lead. This time around they had one of their injured players back and would end up helping them quite a bit,” said coach David Villa. For the two seniors, Ruth Johnson and Jayci Basse, this would be their last home game in front of the home crowd. As it is for any...
Last Thursday, the varsity Lady Bobcats basketball team played in Worland for their 4th conference game, with Thermopolis coming out with a win, 43-40. “It was a much needed game in just trying to break the streak of losing.” stated Coach David Villa. Both teams would come out swinging with offense and defense. “Worland has some very tall players and knowing we would be outmatched height wise we chose to play man to man and use our speed. It is always a fun time playing Worland in Worland. The crowd gets into it and the overall atmos...
On Tuesday February 7, the varsity Lady Cats took on Lovell in a conference game. Coach David Villa said, “Our goal for the game was to make sure we broke the press and pushed the tempo. We felt we could use our speed against them. Initially we got a 9-3 lead, and the game was going our way. Our defense and offense looked good. Their star player Kallie Owens had been scoring in double digits all season and our defense held her to 3 points.” Coach Villa added that he “Felt our game plan worked well against her, however Lily Edwards would score...
The varsity boys basketball team took on Tongue River on Saturday, losing in a close 44-48 battle. Coach Shane Corpening said, “We opened this game in the first quarter with the kind of pace that I wanted to see. We were getting good looks at the basket and stringing together defensive stops. We hit a lull in the second quarter and allowed Tongue River to get back into the game and take the lead into half time. In the second half the game was neck and neck. Neither team could really pull ahead. When it had looked like Tongue River was going t...
Last Friday evening, the Bobcats varsity boys team hosted Lyman for a home game with the Cats falling 48 to 30. "Defensively, I felt like we played really well and did a good enough job to keep us in the ball game (it was a pretty neck and neck game before the fourth quarter). Lyman has some length that gave us some difficulty, but overall, I thought we defended them well. Offensively, on the other hand, we did a lot of good things, but we just couldn't get a shot to fall. For the most part we...
The varsity Lady Cats basketball team hosted the Worland Warriors last Friday. Both teams would be looking for their first conference win. Worland came in at 0-2 in conference play and the Lady Cats at 0-1 in conference. "The team had been working on facing their zone and full court defense along with their height all week long. Worland would be the tallest team the Lady Cats would face all season. The Cats felt that the use of their speed against them would look to force turnovers," said coach...
Last Friday evening, the Bobcat varsity boys basketball team hosted the Warriors at home. “Defensively I thought we played okay in the half court, but we gave Worland too many easy looks in transition and too many second chance opportunities. Those really are back breakers when you are playing a top team like Worland,” said coach Shane Corpening. He added, “We started the first quarter with the pace that I wanted to see. Worland wanted to speed the game up and take us out of our offensive flow with their press. We didn’t respond to it very we...
The varsity boys Bobcat basketball team hosted the Powell Panthers at home last Friday with the Cats falling to the #4 ranked Panthers 85-59. "We played really well in the first quarter. We hit a lull in the second quarter where Powell outscored us by 17. We were able to make a few runs in the second half but couldn't make up the ground from getting down by 17 in the 2nd," said coach Shane Corpening. He added, "Offensively I thought we played our best game of the season. We were getting open loo...

On Friday, December 16, the Lady Cats varsity basketball team traveled to Glenrock High School. “Our scouting report would be to focus on stopping #23 Sarvey who had been averaging over 22.7 ppg and clearly their best player. She would end up with 28 points that night,” said coach David Villa. He added, “We came out the best we had all year. The game against Burns was an initial look as to how good we could be but against Glenrock our offense and defense were spot on. We would lead after the 1st quarter 10-9 and the momentum was going our w...
The Bobcat varsity basketball team had their first competition of the season at the Burns Classic last week. Coach Shane Corpening stated, "The boys played really hard. From a defensive standpoint, we were flying around and forcing turnovers. I thought we did an okay job of rebounding the ball. We certainly have some room for improvement there, but for the first weekend, it wasn't bad. Offensively, we really struggled to make shots. We got plenty of open looks at the basket and we just missed a...
The Lady cats started their season last week at Torrington High School. Coach David Villa said, “We knew we would be facing a feisty team from last year. Torrington came out fast with an 8-0 run on us. We looked anxious playing and forced some early turnovers. After we got through the first quarter things started to settle down for the team. At halftime it was 18-14. We felt we were in a good spot and just needed to take care of the ball and not rush our shooting. We would end up falling to them 50-39. We shot 7-19 from the free throw line. I...

The varsity Lady Cats finished off their season at the 3A Regional Volleyball Tournament last weekend. The girls went up against Mountain View and Lander. Coach Shannon Hill commented,” Every year the inevitable morning after the last match comes. This year as with many years before, I feel like we needed more time, that we weren’t quite finished, that we had so many more gains to make, but unfortunately our season has to come to an end. I truly enjoyed every moment of coaching these amazing athletes and to see them fight with pure grit and...

Coach Hill said, “Our girls made some huge gains this weekend, even though we didn’t come out with a win, we set a goal to be more competitive and the girls did that. We started to really mesh as a team vs. Lyman and Pinedale and proved to ourselves that we can compete and now the task is playing to win. Right now, we are comfortable being 2-3 points behind instead of being 4-5 points a head. Our focus is now becoming mor...
The Varsity Football team headed to Lyman last Friday to take on the Eagles. The Bobcats fought hard but came up short, losing 58-25. “The Bobcats got into a shoot-out with the two-time defending state champion Lyman Eagles this past Friday. The team came up short, yet did some good things in the game. Lyman hadn’t given up more than 14 points to an opponent all season, and the Bobcats were able to score 25,” said coach Matt McPhie. The Lyman offense was clicking, and the Bobcat team was unable to stop them from finding the endzone. Defen...
